It’s been great to be back at school this week after a lovely half term break! Here is what we have been up to…
Read, Write Inc
This week we continued our Read, Write Inc. lessons. We met our new teachers and settled into our new groups, We have been practising our set 2 and 3 sounds, spotting them in words to help us with our blending.
In each reading folder, there is a sound card and list of red words. Any practise with these at home would be extremely helpful and support your child’s reading and writing at home.
Maths
This week in maths we looked at ordinal numbers and sequencing. We spoke about real life examples in which we use ordinal numbers, such as saying date and the floors of buildings, then we coloured in autumnal pictures to demonstrate our understanding of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc . We consolidated our learning in art, talking about the patterns we could make with autumn leaves, explaining where different colour leaves came in the sequences.
Art
This week we did the art part of our new termly topic Thunderbolts and and Lightning, all about the weather, seasons and climates across the world. We looked at British nature artist Andy Goldsworthy and used our art vocab to discuss what we liked about some of his pieces. In particular, we noticed how he uses sticks to create lines, and different coloured leaves to make patterns. Afterwards, we went to forest school to sources natural materials and create our own sculptures, focussing on pattern, shape, line and colour – luckily for us it didn’t rain today! Have a look at our creations.
Next term, week 1:
Next term we will be continuing to work hard on our sounds, reading and writing in our Read, Write Inc lessons.
In Maths, we will be introducing money for the first time. We will learn the value of coins and notes and practice ordering and exchanging.
Love to Learn:
This week we would like you to create a piece of Autumnal artwork using materials of your choice; drawing, painting or sculpture, it’s up to you! You can work straight into your love to learn book, or take inspiration from Any Goldsworthy and head out to the garden, park or beach to use natural materials, taking a photo to stick into your book. Think about which colours we associate with this time of the year and any shapes and patterns you can create with your materials.
We would also like you to practise your sounds as much as possible :)
