Weekly News! 28.06.24
We have had another wonderful week in Reception! It has been hot and sunny and the children have continued to shine brightly in all they have done throughout the week!
Phonics
We have been continuing our Read, Write, Inc lessons in small groups. We continue to focus on speedy recall of sounds to support with segmenting and blending. Strategies we use in RWI include Fred talk to segment and blending, Fred in your head (this is the same as Fred talking, but in their head, so we can’t hear them.) This supports children’s fluency when reading. We then focus on speedy reading. This is when children are able to read words without needing to Fred talk or Fred in their head. Please continue to support your child’s reading at home.
The children have also been developing their writing this week. The children write in each RWI lesson and also do a writing task linked to our thematic lessons each week.
In your child’s reading record, they will have a sticker explaining what their next step is with their reading. When reading with your child at home, please do focus on this skill. Thank you!
Maths
This week we have been learning about the composition of numbers (e.g. knowing that 10 can be made of 6 and 4, but can also be made by adding 9 and 1). The children have also been doubling numbers. They are fabulous at being able to automatically recall their doubles now!
Next week, we will be using time to sequence events that happen in a day. We will also start to experience specific time durations (e.g. learning what 1 second and 1 minute is). Within this learning, children will have experience of using clocks and stopwatches.
Our fact of the week this week has been: 6+4=10 (and 4+6=10)
Thematic
This week we have been learning about what dinosaurs used to eat. We learned about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We have also learned about the different habitats where dinosaurs lived (e.g. wetlands, desert, forest and plains). Later on in the week, the children designed their own dinosaur, thinking about what it ate, where it lived and what special features it had (e.g. sharp teeth, horns). It was great listening to the names they gave their dinosaurs (e.g, spikysaurus, grumpysaurus).
Next week we will be reading the story Dinosaur Farm. We will be learning to answer questions about the story, discuss how we would look after dinosaur eggs and look at the footprints of different dinsoaurs.
