Chilton primary school children take lessons in vital life-saving skills

How to save a life is a vitally important lesson learned by children at Chilton Primary in Ramsgate. Basic First Aid certificates have been awarded to Year 6 pupils who were taught a series of skills and techniques in a special workshop session with Andy Webb from Kent Surf School.

Each class learnt about the importance of basic first aid, what to do in an emergency situation and how to perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) using specialist dummies of a human head and torso. They also discussed how to use an automated external defibrillator that automatically diagnoses life-threatening cardiac emergencies and is able to treat them through the application of electricity which allows the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm. They were also told where in the local community these can be found.

Year 6 teacher Helen Rowland-Hill said: “First Aid and CPR are important skills for everyone to learn. The pupils took their instructions very seriously and asked thoughtful and structured questions.

“As a year group, we take great care and time preparing our children for their forthcoming secondary education journey, enabling them to become responsible and caring citizens."

Deputy head of school Hannah Cheshire said the practical sessions made a real impact with the pupils. She said: “They have acquired knowledge and skills that will stand them in good stead in an emergency throughout their lives.

“We believe this is an important part of their overall education at Chilton. Andy Webb delivered thoughtful, informative and engaging workshops to get his crucial messages across.”
