Friday 10th June 2022

Year 5 have had a fantastic first week back! Here is what we have been up to:
Tuesday
On Tuesday, we had our Aspirations day. We spent lots of time discussing our aspirations for the future, creating manageable steps to help us achieve these. We then wrote letters to our future selves, so that we could open these letters at a later date and compare our aspirations from now to the future. In the afternoon, we created dream jars with our aspirations on. We were so impressed with Year 5s ambitions and goals.
Wednesday
On Wednesday, we had a Money Sense day. We discussed different methods of payment, and how this has evolved over time. We then debated the usefulness versus security of contactless payment methods. We also discussed the difference between wants and needs when spending money, to support us in budgeting our money and spending effectively.
Thursday
On Thursday morning, Year 5 sat their Cognitive Ability Test (CAT). We were so proud of the children's resilience and determination throughout these tests.
In the afternoon, we continued with our learning on Money Sense by designing our dream library. The children were given a budget of £2000 to spend, and did so by researching the prices of the item they wanted to find the best price.
Friday
In maths, we began our learning on Position and Direction, learning how to plot coordinates in the first quadrant. Next week, we will be moving on to translate shapes, before learning to recognise parallel lines and right angles, as well as accurately calculate the perimeter of shapes.
In English, we watched a video of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony. The children then used figurative language to describe this. We were so impressed with the way that the children created atmosphere within their writing, using a range of similes, metaphors and personification to describe this. Next week, we will begin our new book, Running on Empty, and will write an online news article based on Bolt's triumph at the London 2012 Olympics.
Home Learning
To link with our aspiration and money sense day, we would like the children to observe jobs in our local area and consider the following questions:
-
Do any of them appeal to you?
-
What skills might you need to work in this industry?
-
Did you find out about any jobs you didn’t know existed?
This can be presented in any way.
