One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 20th May 2022

Year 5 have had another great week of learning. Here is what we have been up to:

Maths

In maths, we have been learning to convert between fractions, decimals and percentages. We then moved on to focus on converting fractions into percentages and decimals when the denominator was not 10, 100 or 1000, such as 240/320.

Next week, we will be moving on to statistics. Within this, we will be learning how to analyse information from timetables and charts.

English

This week, we began writing our own three chapter narratives based on the characters Emily and Lizzie in our book, Street Child. At the beginning of the week, we focussed on using figurative language to describe, before weaving dialogue into our narratives.

Next week, we will finish writing our narratives, focussing on weaving action, dialogue and description.

Afternoon Learning

This week, we have been learning about human life cycles in Topic. We then began to conduct our investigation into the correlation between height and age, creating our own predictions and collecting data to draw conclusions from.

Next week, we will be finishing our Topic with a Victorian day. On Wednesday, we would love if the children could come in dressed as Victorians, ready to take part in a range of activities which will support their learning of life for children during the Victorian era.

We will also be preparing for our Be Here, Be You, Belong parade on Friday 27th May.

Home Learning

For home learning this week, a mymaths task has been set on converting between fractions, decimals and percentages.

We would also like the children to enter an art competition! The details for this competition are attached to the blog.

Spellings for this week:

Miss Isaac: strain, drain, straight, purchased, regret, product, warehouse, despatched

Miss Hayzelden: sincerely, guarantee, familiar, harass, hindrance, especially, exaggerate, leisure

Mr Abel: accident, accidentally, actual, actually, address, although, answer, appear, arrrive
