Chilton Primary School

One Childhood, One Chance

PSHE and Safe & Healthy Relationships

Our PSHE curriculum draws upon our own contextual knowledge of our children and their needs. Alongside this, we use the curriculum guidance outlined by the PSHE Association and the statutory guidance in Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024 and Teaching Online Safety in Schools.

At Chilton, we believe children need the self-awareness, self-esteem and confidence to:

  • Keep themselves healthy

  • Keep themselves and others safe

  • Recognise and build healthy relationships

  • Respect differences and similarities between people

  • Develop independence and responsibility

  • Prepare for life in a modern, democratic Britain

  • Be aware of, and utilise their own and others’ abilities

Our aim is that through the teaching of PSHE, pupils will develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to value their own achievements, asses and deal with risk appropriately and become aware of their own values, whilst celebrating and respecting those of others.

Children will explore the world around them and participate in a range of learning opportunities through a range of medium including drama, role play, enquiry, discussion, circle times and active learning.

Each new term begins with learning focused on PSHE and our school Values (Respect, Equality, Courage and Kindness). These weeks use objectives drawn from the aforementioned documentation and outline learning for each year group at age appropriate levels. Weaved throughout this learning are themes surrounding well-being, diversity and citizenship. British Values are revisited across the year and taught explicitly in Term 4.

For the academic year 2024-25 PSHE and Values learning is focused as follows:

  • One Childhood, One Chance and The Chilton Way - including social skills and Zones of Regulation

  • Kindness and Safe & Healthy Relationships (including anti-bullying week)

  • Champions of Courage & Healthy&Safe Relationships (Online Safety)

  • British Values

  • Be Here, Be You, Belong

  • Aspiration & Healthy Relationships (Your Words Can Hurt)

However, PSHE learning is also interwoven across all aspects of our curriculum, including assemblies. Online safety is also a thread that runs through all of our learning on a weekly basis.
