One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 28.3.25

We are so excited to share that we have had such a fantastic week in Year 2! The children have been full of enthusiasm, and it has been wonderful to witness their eagerness to learn and explore.

English

In our English lessons we’ve kicked off a brand new non-fiction book called How Do Bees Make Honey? The children are really enjoying it, and it’s been a great help in boosting their fact-writing skills.

As we dive into this buzzing topic, the children are working on creating a non-chronological report. It’s a fun way for them to share all the cool facts they’re learning about bees. We’re also focusing on different types of sentences, like questions, statements, and exclamations, which will really add some flair to their writing!

Reading

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319

For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader

Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

Over the past week, we’ve delved into the world of fractions, and I am thrilled to report that the children can now confidently name the numerator and denominator, along with explaining their roles in representing parts of a whole. We have explored halves and quarters, and even challenged ourselves with the concept of thirds! Their enthusiasm and willingness to engage with these concepts have truly been inspirational.

Looking ahead to next week, we will continue our adventure with fractions, focusing on how these can be represented in various ways. This will include exploring visual representations, such as using pie charts and number lines, which will help deepen their understanding and make learning even more fun!

Thematic

This week concludes our thematic journey for this term. We focused on the fascinating world of animals and their offspring, which has sparked a great deal of enthusiasm in the classroom. The children explored how different groups of animals showcase remarkable diversity in their young. From majestic mammals to colourful birds, our discussions delved into the various characteristics and appearances of animal offspring.

The students participated in a variety of engaging activities, such as matching animals with their young and explaining the unique features that distinguish each group. It has been a pleasure to witness their curiosity and eagerness to learn as they connected concepts and drawn parallels between species. Observing their creativity in illustrating animals and discussing their observations has made this thematic journey all the more enriching.

Next week we will have an RE focus.

Love to Learn

In maths we have been learning all about fractions – can you find any fractions in the environment around you? There might be ¼ of a pizza left or 2/3 of the bath full! We want to hear about all the fractions you can see. Be creative and have fun!
