One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 28.3.25

We have had an amazing week in Year 4. On Thursday, we had 3 visitors come in to school to introduce a Royal Society project that the children started this week and will finish in Year 6!  Greg and Richard joined us from Birdwise, and Brian from Cumins and the children had an amazing morning finding out about the project and taking part in exciting and fun activities.  Here is what we have been up to…

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning more about decimal numbers. The children compared decimal numbers using comparison signs e.g. 3.14 > 3.12 < 3.19. We then put decimal numbers in order and used the vocabulary ascending and descending order. We then found out how to round decimal numbers to the nearest whole number (integer). E.g. 6.3 rounded to the nearest whole number is 6, 84.5 rounded to the nearest integer is 85.

Next week we will be learning about time. We will go over 24 hour digital time again and match analogue clocks to 24 hour digital clocks. We will then be converting units of time e.g. 3 minutes = ___ seconds, 7 weeks = ____ days.

English

In English this week, we have continued learning about how to write a newspaper report. We have learnt to use emotive language in a newspaper and then how to write a concluding paragraph, ensuring we use the correct tense. We then planned our ‘showpiece’ newspaper report where we tried to use all the skills we had learnt in this unit. Our showpiece newspaper reports were about a tiger that escaped from the zoo and was on the loose in Ramsgate. Their reports were absolutely fantastic – well done Year 4!

Next week, we will be writing a short information text about refugees.

Thematic

It has been Technology week in Year 4. We found out about toys that use circuits to enhance the quality of the toy. The children were amazing at working out what the circuit inside the toy might look like and then drew the circuit diagrams to match. They were then given a design brief to design a light up or moving (or both) picture. For example, a clown with a light up nose and spinning bow tie. They were very imaginative, and their designs were great. On Thursday afternoon, we made our moving pictures and they had such an enjoyable lesson. Seeing their faces light up when they succeeded in making their pictures move and light up was amazing!

Here we are making them…

Next week is RE week and we are learning about Christianity and the Easter story.

Spellings

There are no spellings to learn for next week.

Love to Learn

This week’s home learning task is science. As we have been learning about electricity, we would like you to make a poster that explains how to stay safe around electricity. You could draw your poster by hand and colour it in, or you could make your poster digitally on a computer or tablet and print it out, or email it to your teacher.

Please could this challenge be handed in by Wednesday 2nd April.

Messages

  • Many thanks to the children who have already bought in a plain T-shirt (white would be best) for their end of unit art piece. Please could you send in a plain T-shirt with your child’s name on (that you do not mind being painted – these do not need to be new) by Thursday 24th April. The children will be using them on Friday 25th April.
