One Childhood, One Chance

07.02.2025 Weekly News!

What a busy week we have had! From theatre shows to singing at the O2 and from adding and subtracting fractions to going off-site for a cross country run, Year 5 have had a brilliant week and made lots of memories.

English

This week, we have been reading about AJ taking part in a cross country competition. We then experienced it for ourselves and used this as inspiration to write in role. We also went to Chatham House to watch their show of Matilda –we loved it!

Next week, we will be using our class text as inspiration. We will be planning, writing and editing our own extended narratives.

Please note that the children have been given a challenge to pass 2 AR quizzes by next Friday to earn themselves a reward of double break time! Please support your child with this. These could be physical AR books or electronic MyOn books.

Maths

This week, we have refined our division skills and used these to solve word problems. We have to think about how to answer the questions by using the remainder. We also added and subtracted fractions that have the same denominator.

Next week, we will be retrieving what we remember about equivalent fractions and then adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators.

Thematic

This week, we have learned about states of matter. We have learned how dissolving a solid in a liquid makes a solution and investigated what affects the rate at which sugar dissolves. We talked a lot about how a fair test is only fair when we change one variable and keep all the other variables the same.

Next week, we will be learning about how some changes are reversible and some are irreversible. We will also learn about how to separate materials.

Love to Learn

At home, please pick one of these challenges. Each challenge will be awarded a different number of house points. Good luck and be sure to challenge yourself!

Vocabulary from our science lessons: thermal, conductor, insulator, heat flow, independent/dependent/ controlled variable, dissolve, solid, liquid, gas, states of matter, solution, process, change,
