What another fabulous week we have had in school. It’s hard to believe we are only one week away from the end of Term 3 – time really does fly when you’re having fun! Let’s have a look at our learning this week.
English
Year 2 continue diving deep into the adventures of Traction Man, and the children have been having such a great time exploring the story. They've done an amazing job at asking questions and even dramatising parts of the narrative—it’s been a real treat to see their creativity in action!
This week in English, our focus has been on making our sentences more exciting. The children have been learning how to use speech in their writing and have picked up the use of inverted commas like pros! We’ve also discussed different ways to start our sentences and how to use conjunctions to join them together, which has really helped Them express their ideas more clearly.
We are thoroughly impressed by their enthusiasm and the fantastic writing they are producing. It’s wonderful to see their hard work paying off!
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319
For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader
Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
The children have blown us away with their amazing skills in statistics! We’ve been diving into pictograms and learning how they can help us collect and compare data. Figuring out the key features of a pictogram, especially how many items each picture represents, has been a bit tricky but the kids have picked it up like champs!
As the week went on, we moved on to creating our own pictograms, which was so much fun! The kids had a great time answering questions about the pictograms they made, really showing off their teamwork and critical thinking skills.
For our number day, we even conducted a survey to find out which biscuit Year 2 likes the most. I won't give away the winner just yet, so make sure to ask your child about it; I’m sure they’ll be eager to share!
Thematic
We would love to share share some exciting updates from our Thematic lessons this week, where we have fully embraced our roles as budding geographers!
We have been diving deep into the wonders of our world, employing atlases as our trusty companions while we navigate various parts of the globe. The children have done remarkably well identifying key geographical features such as the equator, the Northern Hemisphere, and the Southern Hemisphere. It has been delightful to see their enthusiasm as they explore which countries and continents lie above or below the equator.
During our discussions, we also delved into why certain countries near the equator enjoy warmer climates. The children’s curiosity and engagement have made the learning experience not only informative but also incredibly enjoyable. I encourage you to discuss these topics at home; perhaps you could even use an atlas or globe together to explore different regions!
Love to learn
This week in maths, our learning has been all about pictograms. We would love to see the children conduct their own survey and represent this on a pictogram – don’t forget the title.
We can’t wait to see your super ideas. Be creative and have fun!
