The weather was all over the place this week! Hopefully, next week will be a little more predictable. Let’s have a look at what we learnt this week!
English
In English this week we have begun reading our new book ‘Pebble in my Pocket’ by Meredith Hooper. This book details the history of our planet by following the journey of a pebble through volcanic eruptions, the development of sedimentary rock and many other significant periods of our planet’s geographical development. Alongside this we have been learning skills that help us to write non-chronological reports. Skills like the use of technical language, compound & complex sentence and appropriate paragraphing.
Next week we will be using all these skills to create a non-chronological report of our own.
Maths
This week in Maths we have been working on our multiplication. We looked at how we can partition two digit numbers to make multiplication simpler. For example
47 x 5 is quite dauting but if we partition the 47 into 40 and 7 we can then calculate 40 x 5 and 7 x 5 and then add the products together.
At the end of the week, we looked at multiplying 3 numbers together and learnt that if there are brackets in an equation we must work out the brackets first. Year 4 really impressed us with how they grasped this concept!
Next week we will look at division.
Thematic
This week’s thematic has had us learning about how Italy Is different to the UK. We looked at the similarities, like both countries having mountains and forests, and the differences such as Italy’s mountains being far taller than ours and then having hotter weather due to being closer to the equator. We also looked at the world map to identify and label these countries and other significant features of our planet like the equator, Greenwich meridian and the tropics of cancer and Capricorn.
Next week we will be finishing off Geography by looking at how to read the grid reference and symbols on a map and then moving onto DT!
We will also be doing last week's homophones in this week's spelling test so make sure to practise the tricky ones from last week.
