The children are becoming a lot more confident with fred talking now. It has been fantastic listening in as their fluency builds. Please do continue to practice at home as it really does help support their learning in school.
In our small groups, we continue to learn our set 2 sounds, including recognizing these in words and writing words containing them. We also practice reading ‘alien words.’ These are words which have been made up! An example of an alien word is vam! It is important that we do not try to make alien words into real words!
Maths
Our learning has been about comparing numbers using the vocabulary more than, fewer than and the same. To understand the value of amounts, we explored numbers through tens frames. We selected 2 tens frames and compared them using the vocabulary of the week. With more and more practice, we are getting really good at recognising amounts on the tens frames without having to count them too! For example, we can see when the tens frame is full, the amount is 10, when one is missing there are 9 because we know one less than 10 is 9. We also know that when only the top row is full, there are 5, because half of 10 is 5.
After that, we explored number lines. We discussed how the numbers increase as we move up the number line and decrease as we move down. To help us understand this further, we created our own number lines by ordering the numbers, discussing which number would come next. We played a game with our number lines where we had to find a number which was more than 5, or one less than 9. This was fun as sometimes there was one answer, and sometimes there were lots of answers.
At the end of the week, we had a problem-solving lesson. The skill we were learning was to find all possibilities. We had to work systematically to ensure we found all the answers. Billy the clown needed his nose and bowtie to be coloured in different combinations, but we only had 3 colours to do so. This was quite a tricky task, and we will continue to practise this skill again.
Thematic
Our superhero fun has continued this week! The book Eliot Midnight Superhero was our story of the week. We thought of our own adventures for Eliot, including David Attenborough needing our help to remove the rubbish in the ocean. Using our ideas, we created a storyboard and discussed our ideas together.
At the end of the story, the Queen gives Eliot a medal. To show our appreciation, we wanted to make Eliot a medal too, decorating them using collage. We learnt that collage is an art skill where we had to collect and sort our materials to be glued onto the medal. The materials could be cut, torn and overlapped to create the final piece. In order to choose our materials, we were inspired by the story. Some of us chose shiny paper to represent the Queen’s jewels, pom poms for the asteroid, ripped blue tissue paper for the stormy sea or yellow wool for the lion’s mane.
At the end of the week, we explored the forces push and pull. We discussed how we could see these forces in our story, then had to help Eliot on a secret mission. There were lots of different activities to choose from where we had to decide whether we were using push or pull. This was so much fun and we are now super force detectives!
Next week we will be exploring the book Michael Recycle.
