One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! w.b 27.1.25

What a wonderful week we have had!

Here is what we have been up to this week…

English

As a whole-year group, we have embarked on an adventurous journey with our new book, "Traction Man" by Mini Grey. The children have been incredibly enthusiastic, and we kicked off our exploration by making some wonderful predictions about the story's events. It’s always fascinating to see their imaginations at work! They also crafted some thoughtful questions they would like to ask Traction Man himself, which has sparked some lively discussions in the classroom.

In addition to our reading activities, our English groups have been focusing on expanding our writing skills. The children have been practising writing expanded noun phrases to enhance their descriptions. This exercise has encouraged them to think more creatively and to express their ideas in vivid detail. Furthermore, we introduced the concept of 'action' in writing.

In Read, Write Inc, we have been working hard on ensuring we spot special friends and remembering to use these in our writing.

Reading

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319

For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader

Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been tackling some challenging word problems that encourage critical thinking and independent problem-solving skills.

To support our learning, we utilised a 100 square, which enabled the children to practise their skills in adding and subtracting. This hands-on approach helps to reinforce their understanding of numbers and operations in a fun and engaging way.

As the week progressed, we focused on the term's problem-solving skill of 'visualising'. This technique encourages students to create mental images or drawings based on the information given in a problem, making it easier for them to understand and solve the challenges they encounter. We've seen some fantastic work as they have applied this skill to their word problems!

Thematic

This week, in our thematic lessons, we delved into the fascinating world of Geography.

We began our exploration by focusing on the seas and oceans that surround the United Kingdom. The children have been actively engaged in this topic, and it was wonderful to see them place these bodies of water accurately on the map. This activity not only enhanced their geographical skills but also sparked some lively discussions about marine life and environmental conservation.

Continuing our journey, we revisited our Year 1 learning about the seven continents and turned our attention to the five major oceans. It was heartening to see the children's enthusiasm as they built upon their prior knowledge, deepening their understanding of the world around them. What a brilliant week it has been!

Love to learn

This week we would love for you to find out more about one of the five oceans: The Pacific Ocean, The Atlantic Ocean, The Indian Ocean, The Arctic Ocean or The Southern Ocean. This can be displayed any way you wish 😊
