Weekly News! 24.01.25

What a knowledge filled week it has been in Year 3! From our building on Scientific vocabulary in Thematic to our fabulous learning on fractions.
Guided Reading
In Guided Reading, we continued our exploration of Anthony Browne books by beginning with ‘The Tunnel’. We have begun to grow our understanding of suspense by annotating some suspense style texts as well as identifying suspense within The Tunnel. Furthering our comprehension and retrieval skills we answered a variety of questions on the text and were able to clarifying meanings of unfamiliar words by using our growing dictionary skills.
Next week, we will be continuing with Anthony Browne’s text, ‘The Tunnel’.
English
In English this week, we used our text ‘The Tunnel’ to be truly inspired within our writing. We began the week by crawling through a real life tunnel and created some incredible artwork to demonstrate our experience. Next, we gathered mature and descriptive vocabulary which we used within our writing. Following on from this, we tried very hard to stay within past tense to retell the text and used a wide range of verbs and adverbs to describe the actions of the characters. We even managed to write sentences that began with adverbs, challenging ourselves to remember when a comma is needed. We finished the week by writing a phenomenal showpiece, showing off our suspense writing skills with a tense narrative and applying all this week’s learning.
Next week, we will continue with ‘The Tunnel’.
Maths
In Maths this week we returned to Fractions. We began the week by focussing on equivalent fractions, even getting to slice up some delicious sweets and cakes to demonstrate fractions of equal value. Returning to comparative signs (<>=) we were able to accurately compare fractions with the same denominator and order them both in ascending and descending order.
Next week in Maths we will be returning to Addition.
Fact of the week
Next week, the fact of the week is 4x6=24
Thematic
This week we have continued to focus on Science with our topic ‘How my Body Works’. We learnt lots about the skeleton this week and can now list the 3 purposes of the human skeleton! Next, we considered the skeletons, or lack of, within other animals building on our understanding of vertebrates and invertebrates and understanding the different between exoskeletons and endoskeletons. We got to examine an exciting exoskeleton on a real tarantula! Finally, we explored joints, by examining the three different types in the human body and constructing our own working model of a hinge joint.
Home Learning
This week we have furthered on learning on fractions. Focussing on our learning on equivalent fractions, please tried to find fractions equivalent to ½, 1/3, ¼ and 1/5. Below, please see an example of a fraction wall to support with the home learning.
