One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 24.1.25

What a wonderful week of learning we have had in Year 4 this week!

English

In English this week, we have been rewriting the story of Fly Eagle Fly as our own five-part narrative. We have focused on a range of writing skills including using paragraphs to structure our work (remember TiP ToP!), writing correctly punctuated dialogue and using complex sentences. In our Guided Reading lessons, we completed a Fly Eagle Fly book review, answered some volcano related comprehension questions and, in our weekly Reading for Pleasure session, asked questions to our favourite literary characters. Next week, we will be starting our exciting new text entitled 'The Pebble in my Pocket' and writing information texts.

Maths

In Maths, we have been working on our addition and subtraction skills. We used rounding to help us estimate before completing additions and subtractions before using the inverse operation to check our answers. Finally, we used our honed addition and subtraction skills to complete a range of one and two-step word problems. Next week, we will be focusing on multiplication and looking at the associative and distributive laws.

Thematic

This week ,we have continued our Geography learning focusing on how earhtquakes are formed and their deadly features, looking at a case study of Montserrat and looking at why people choose to live near volcanoes resulting in some rather lively debates in both Team Royal and Team Indigo! Next week, we will be making geographical comparisons between the United Kingdom and Italy, locating important locations on a map and using the 8 points of a compass.

Messages

As the children’s afternoons are now longer (due to the changed time for the Thrive lunchtimes), their PE session is now longer. Therefore, we are no longer doing an additional sports session, so the children only need to wear trainers on their PE day.
