Wow, what another fabulous week filled with so much learning! Year 2 have truly shown such enthusiasm across all lessons, and it has been a joy to watch the children engage and thrive.
The children have really embraced the topics, demonstrating curiosity and a willingness to dive deep into their learning. It has been fantastic to see them working collaboratively and supporting each other along the way.
English
We continue to practise our sounds and red words, and I have to say, the children have been amazing! Their excitement and effort have really impressed us all. It’s so fantastic to watch them learn and grow. If you have a chance to do a bit of practice at home, that would be brilliant – it really helps boost their confidence!
We’ve also been working on keeping our handwriting nice and neat, and I can see a real difference in their work. It’s so lovely to see their writing becoming clearer.
In our English lessons this week we have been focusing on honing our writing skills, particularly through the use of the first person. The children have been practising incorporating verbs and adverbs into their writing, alongside employing emotive language to enhance their storytelling. It has been wonderful to see their creativity flourish as they express themselves.
To put these skills into practice, the students crafted their own diary entries from Max's point of view, drawing on the emotional depth of his experiences. This exercise not only engaged them but also helped to solidify their understanding of perspective in writing.
Looking ahead, I am thrilled to announce that next week we will be starting our new book, Traction Man.
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319
For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader
Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
Maths this week has been quite an exciting journey for the children.
Our primary focus has been on subtracting numbers, and we began our lessons using base ten blocks to really grasp the concept. This hands-on approach helped the children understand the necessity of making an exchange, especially when they found themselves in a situation where there were no more ones left to subtract! It was a delight to see their confidence grow as they navigated this process.
Once the children felt secure with subtracting one-digit numbers, we moved on to tackle two-digit numbers. We encouraged them to remember to always subtract the ones first, which has become a helpful mantra in the classroom!
To wrap up our week, we delved into some word problems that challenged their application of subtraction. Many of the children took on the extra challenge of a three-step word problem, and their resilience was commendable.
Thematic
his week in our thematic learning, we have truly embraced the fascinating Harbour! Our highlight has certainly been our educational trip to Ramsgate Harbour, where the children were able to see firsthand many of the wonderful topics we've been studying.
We began the week by delving into the significant role Ramsgate Harbour played during World War II, particularly the involvement of the 'Little Ships' in Operation Dynamo. The children's enthusiasm was palpable, and they particularly enjoyed the challenge of spotting one of the original Little Ships during our visit!
As we progress, we have shifted our focus to learning about the four capital cities of the United Kingdom: England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. A crucial part of this learning is understanding where Ramsgate fits into that geographical picture. I encourage you to discuss with your children how Ramsgate is related to these cities and to consider its place on the map.
