10.1.25 Weekly News!
What a fantastic start to 2025 for Year 5! It has been amazing to see everyone again and the smiles on faces coming into school!
English
This week, we have started our new book called ‘Running on Empty’ by S.E Durrant. We have learnt how AJ, an 11 year old boy, went to the London 2012 Olympics and saw Usain Bolt win gold in the 100m sprint. His aspiration is to become a successful runner just like Usain Bolt. In our lessons this week, we have been describing the Olympic Stadium on that day. We describe the atmosphere using the five senses to describe it before the race, during the race and after the race.
Next week, we will be continuing ‘Running on Empty’ and creating our own newspaper articles about the 100m sprint.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been concentrating on place value. At the start of the week, we looked at counting forwards and backwards through negative numbers, and we finished the week by counting in powers of 10.
Next week, we will be recapping rounding and using rounding to check addition and subtraction questions.
PSHE
This week, we started our new PSHE topic called ‘Champions of Courage’. We looked at what courage is and how we have shown courage in our lives. We then looked at our Year 5 champion of courage, which is artist Ai Wei Wei. We saw why he was courageous and had a go at creating our own pieces of artwork linked to him.
Next week, we will begin our new thematic called ‘Marvels of Matter’.
