Weekly News! 4.10.24
What a fantastic week we have had here at school. We kicked off the week with a wonderful surprise; we walked into a room filled with games! The excitement was palpable, and it set the tone for the days to come.
Play is such a vital part of our learning journey, and this week, we have really focused on working on those important social skills and interactions with one another. Engaging in play not only facilitates cognitive development but also fosters cooperation, communication, and problem-solving abilities among our students. It has been heartening to see them connect and collaborate in such positive ways.
As we continue to reinforce these skills, we encourage you to engage in play activities at home as well. Board games, outdoor sports, or even simple group activities such as cooking together can be fantastic ways for your child to develop these essential skills further. It’s amazing how much children can learn when they’re having fun!
We also want to say a HUGE well done to all the children for their wonderful hard work put into their Harvest assembly, they all showed great courage and sang beautifully. Thank you for all your donations!
English
We have been continuing to focus on reviewing the sounds we’ve already learnt, which has been a delight to witness. The children are also engaging with fantastic new sounds, and it’s incredible to see them recognising their “special friends” and using ‘Fred Talking’ to enhance their reading skills. Their confidence in reading words is really coming on!
We have been particularly enthusiastic about using Fred fingers when writing words in our books, and it is certainly paying off. Additionally, we have been practising our red words, which are crucial for developing their reading and writing capabilities. A friendly reminder that familiarising them with these red words at home can make a significant difference in their progress, so any extra practice would be greatly appreciated.
In Mrs Winchcombe’s English group, we have been focusing on creating our own characters and settings to develop original narratives. The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by the students have truly been remarkable.
In our lessons, we have placed a strong emphasis on using descriptive language. The students have worked diligently to incorporate adjectives, verbs, and adverbs into their stories, ensuring that their writing is both vivid and engaging. It has been a joy to see them express their thoughts and imaginations so vividly!
I kindly encourage you to discuss their narratives with them at home. You might ask them about their characters and settings, which will help to reinforce their learning and boost their confidence in sharing their work with others. Next week we will be starting a brand-new book!
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Some children have been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319
For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader
Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
Our focus has been on subtraction, and we’ve been exploring it using part-part-whole models. The children have been learning to partition numbers, which has been instrumental in helping them solve missing part-part-whole questions. This method not only clarifies the concept of subtraction but also reinforces their understanding of number relationships.
We’ve also used base ten and Numicon resources to further enhance their grasp of the topic. These manipulative tools allow the children to visualise and physically interact with numbers, making learning much more engaging and effective.
Additionally, we revisited our previous learning about subtracting one-digit numbers from two-digit numbers using a 100 square. This recap has proven beneficial as it solidifies their confidence and skills in completing subtraction tasks accurately.
To support your child’s learning at home, I encourage you to incorporate subtraction into everyday activities. Whether it’s counting down items as you prepare for dinner or reducing numbers during shopping, every bit of practice will help reinforce what they’ve learnt in school. We will be continuing this learning next week.
