This week has seen the first PE lesson, the beginning of our topic ‘On the Farm’ and the children immersing themselves in activities during Power Play, building on the learning that has taken place during the week. The children have made such wonderful friendships between classes, and it has been wonderful watching them start to problem solve and work as a team.
Read Write Inc
We are thrilled with the children’s eagerness to learn their sounds this week. We have begun the Read Write Inc programme and started to learn sounds c,k,b,u and f. We have sent the pink sound books home this week for you to review the sound of the day with your child. We learn a new sound a day and revise this throughout the day and then the week. The children are learning the patter to help them form the sound and have been ‘pinching their pencils’ to help them form the sounds correctly. Here is an example of a patter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gg8-Zg99FbI&list=PLv80XE_mA4uy5WO-mMcUQ2vX6AdVpIPEk
Next week, we will be learning the sounds e,l,h,sh and r.
We have been working on breaking words into sounds and blending the sounds together to make a word. So c-a-t together makes the word cat. We encourage you to begin to break words up into sounds as this encourages children to think about the sounds in a word when reading and writing them. We play eye spy but say the sound sin the word such as b-u-s and they would say bus!
Maths
This week, we have been working hard at counting. The children made their own rules: 1) look at what you are counting 2) count slowly 3) count in order. They began counting actions, claps, stomps, movements and sounds. Then, we moved to counting objects and then counting amounts in pictures. The children have been counting to 10, working hard at following the steps carefully.
Next week, we are learning how to write numbers 6,7,8,9 and 10.
Thematic
This week has seen the beginning of Receptions new thematic ‘On the Farm’. The children started their new topic by explaining what they could feel in the bag. They had to use their senses to help them and determined there was a cow, pig, chicken, goat, duck, hay and a LADY BIRD! They discovered that they are learning about Farms and were beginning their thematic by reading ‘What the lady bird heard’. This is a story that is based on a farm, about farm animals and a little lady bird who have a tricky situation when 2 robbers want to steam the fine prize cow! They have been making maps of the farm, retelling the story and ordering the story from beginning to end.
Next week, we will be looking at painting techniques and how Van Goh’s style, particularly in Wheatfield with crows, can be achieved.
