Weekly News! 27.09.24
Well done reception - we have made it to the halfway point of our first term at school!
Thank you so much for all your efforts on our Dress to Express day! The children looked fantastic in their outfits.
RWI
This week in RWI we have continued to learn set 1 sounds. You will find the new sounds in your child’s pink sound book which is coming home today.
We have also begun word time- this is where we practise listening to words spoken in sounds. We call this fred talk and our helper Fred the frog helps with this. When the teacher speaks in sounds, the children are learning to orally blend this into a word eg s-a-d is sad!
Together we then build the word we want to make on the sound chart by segmenting the sounds we will need. If we are making the word sad- we break this down into the sounds s-a-d.
We then work with our partner to build the word on our whiteboards with magnetic letters.
We are getting a lot more confident hearing the sounds in words and orally blending words too. It can still be a little tricky when we don’t have a picture to support us. You could try practising this with your child at home with simple games or tasks eg can you put on your c-oa-t? Say hello to the d-o-g!
Maths
In maths this week, we have been learning about numerals 1-5. We use the numberblocks to help familiarise children with the numerals and support their understanding of quantity. To help us remember the formation of the numbers, we learnt a patter for each and spent time practising writing them.
Below are the formation rhymes we use if you want to practise this at home.
Next week, we will be learning to count actions and quantities up to 10.
Thematic
In thematic, we looked at pieces of art which are self-portraits and discussed what we noticed. We could see they were paintings and drawings of the artists face. We used mirrors to see what facial features we have, and where on our face they are. We then drew our own self-portraits.
We then explored primary and secondary colours. Primary colours have a special job to do- they help us create secondary colours. We explored mixing colours together – creating magic!
We used this knowledge to create bright and colourful backgrounds for our self-portraits. Our inspiration for this was the work of Yayoi Kusama who uses bright colours in her paintings. We used a mixture of primary and secondary colours.
We ended the week celebrating our similarities and differences with our dress to express day.
Next week we will begin our On the Farm topic.
