Weekly News! 20.9.24
It has been another fantastic week in Year 5!
English
During English this week, we have continued working on our non-chronological reports about Antarctic animals. We started off the week by researching and writing two more paragraphs about seals, squids or whales. We got to pick which animal we researched! We then wrote our introduction and summary. To finish off we came together in groups of 5 and each picked one paragraph we were going to write. The final pieces are amazing! Next week, we are going to be moving on to character description and we are going to be describing Shackleton.
Maths
This week in maths, we have moved on to addition. We began the week by looking at column method up to 5 digits. We looked at what is important in column method and never forget regrouping! After that, we concentrated on missing vales and finding mistakes through column addition. Next week, we will be moving on to subtraction up to 5-digit numbers.
Thematic
In Thematic this week, we have continued ‘Across the Pond’. We started the week by naming and locating different major countries, states and cities on a map of North America. We then moved on to land use patterns for North America and why they were important, and we finished the week by looking at how the different time zones can impact on the time of day it is across the world. Next week, we will be learning how the land was used in more detail during this lesson. We will explore the transition from nomadic lifestyles to farming and explore some land patterns, such as farming, and compare them to the UK. We will look at examples from Mexico, America and Canada to show how the geography (topography and climate) impact upon what is grown and how. We will then begin to look at the environmental regions of North America. We will learn to locate and name the mountain regions in the UK and North America and create 3D models of these. At the end of the week we will be learning what a desert is and then locating deserts around the world and in North America. We will know what the world’s deserts can be hot or cold.
