English
This week, we have completed our final writing tasks on Kate Greenaway's 'Way Home'. We finished our homeless non chronological reports on Monday before writing a setting description of the hustling, bustling city scene in the book. We then planned and wrote a diary entry as Shane reflecting on his emotions about being homeless. To prepare for this, we took our cardboard boxes (thanks to all the children who brought them in) to build our vocabulary and imagine what being homeless would feel like. Next week, we will be starting a new book, 'Floodland' by Marcus Sedgwick and will be writing letters using modal verbs.
Maths
This week, we have been working on our addition skills. We recapped how to use the column method before using our estimation skills to support our addition and solving a range of addition word problems. Next week, we will be focusing on subtraction. Our multiplication 'Fact of the Week' is 6 x 6 = 36
Thematic curriculum
This week, we have to continued to work on our 'Darwin's Delights' Thematic unit. We looked at how to read and understand maps, firstly plotting a local journey through Ramsgate before plotting Darwin's journey on the HMS Beagle. We also learnt about the Equator, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and the Prime Median. Next week, we will be looking at Darwin's findings on his journey and how this helped him coin his theory of evolution. We also completed a French knowledge harvest of previous learning and, in Art, experimented with different mediums for drawing. Next week, we will be looking at French foods and using different gradient pencils to draw with.
Love to Learn
For the children's Love to Learn task this week, please could they research the Galapagos Islands. As always, they may present their findings in an interesting/exciting way of their choosing.
Additionally, if anyone has any fossils at home, we'd love you to bring them in for Year 6 to study next week. Thanks in advance!
