Well done to Year 5 for another fantastic week of learning!
English
This week, we have started to read Alfred Noyes's famous romantic poem 'The Highwayman'. We debated whether stealing is always wrong or is sometimes justifiable. We discussed this at length, coming up with some interesting points before writing a balanced arguments considering and building on reasons for both points of view. Next week, we will finish reading the Highwayman and will be writing persuasively.
Maths
This week, we have been looking at shape, specifically using know facts to find missing lengths and measuring and finding perimeter. We then completed an investigation on Friday where we compared area and perimeter and experimented with shapes of similar and different areas and perimeters. Next week, we will be studying metric and imperial measures.
Afternoons
In our afternoons this week, we have continued our Tides of Change thematic learning, focusing on Geography. We learnt about the effects humans have on physical geography and looked at how urbanisation, deforestation and pollution have changed some major locations on the globe. We completed a Google Earth scavenger hunt to find these locations. We also wrote a balanced argument about the positive and negative impact of the Thanet Offshore Wind Farm.
Home Learning
For home learning this week, please could children investigate the perimeters of different items, rooms, objects etc in their houses/towns. Are any surprising? Which items have bigger perimeters than others? As always, the children can complete this learning in any creative way of their choosing.
