Weekly News! 22.3.24
Year 5 have enjoyed another fabulous week of learning. Here's what we've been up to:
English
This week, we have been studying Ancient Greek myths. On Monday, we looked at some pictures of myths being shown on Greek pottery (before learning we would be seeing those exact pots later in the week). We wrote descriptions of Greek heroes and villains before writing the dialogue and action of Odysseus's encounter with Polyphemus. We then edited and improved this piece of writing by adding in further description. Next week, we will be planning and writing our own Greek myths.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been looking at angles. We recapped the different types of angles before we worked on our accuracy when it came to measuring and drawing angles. We then looked at finding missing angles around a point. Next week, we will be continuing our study of angles before moving on to multiplication and division.
Thematic
This week, we have continued our study of Ancient Greece in our Term 4 thematic unit, 'Gods and Mortals'. We recapped some of the most important city-states (Athens, Olympia, Sparta, Corinth) and their differences, similarities and cultures. We then looked at Herodotus, the 'Father of history' and debated whether he, as a source, was reliable or not and why. Finally, we completed a Greek pottery study, investigating pictures of different Greek jars and vases to see what we could learn about Greek life. Next week, we will be looking at the birth of democracy in greater detail and comparing an Ancient Greek city state to modern Britain.
This week, we also visited the British Museum in London to look at their Ancient Greek displays and artefacts. We found scale models of parts of the Parthenon and identified the different features of Greek architecture we've learned about before studying the vast arrays of Greek pottery including some that told the story of Greek myths that we studied as a class. We all had a wonderful day and represented Chilton with our best manners and behaviour.
Home Learning
For the Love to Learn task this week, please could children choose an Ancient Greek city-state to investigate in greater detail. The children can present their findings in a creative way of their choice.
