English
This week we learnt about writing captions and then planned our own newspaper report. We got to pick from one of three subjects for our report; ‘Mr McAuley wins Headteacher of the Year’, a sporting event of our choosing or ‘Tiger on the loose’.
We spent a lesson coming up with our stories and planning how we will write about them. Then we spent two days writing them up so we can create a huge class newspaper! We all worked so hard on our reports and are really proud of what we accomplished! Take a look at them below:
Next week we will be learning how to write an information text.
Maths
In maths this week we have continued our learning about time. We began by learning about 24-hour time and how we need to add on 12 to the hours when we are looking at times in the afternoon. We then moved on to converting time between 12-hour time and 24-hour time. For example:
3:00pm = 15:00 but 3am = 03:00
Finally, we have been learning to calculate time durations. For instance, if a train leaves Margate at 8:00am and it takes 4 and a half hours to get to Birmingham. What time does it arrive in Birmingham.
Next week we will be learning about identifying obtuse, acute and right angles as well as ordering and comparing them.
Thematic
This week we have taken our scientific knowledge of circuits and used it to design a product that contains a circuit.
We began by designing a complete, working circuit that contained a switch, a motor, a bulb, a battery and some wires. We then discussed incorporating this circuit into a picture we had drawn and all the equipment we would need so that the picture would come alive.
In our next lesson we worked together in groups to try and create what we had planned. When we encountered the realities of incorporating a circuit into a product, we realised we would sometimes have to deviate from our plan. A big problem we found was that one battery did not have enough power to light up the bulb and make the motor run, so we had to add more batteries in. Also, as is often the case in life, we sometimes found that even though the circuit was complete, it wouldn’t work and so we had to learn to diagnose the problem and find out which component was responsible.
By the end of the lesson, we had all made working products and were great as discussing and evaluating the process and what we would do differently next time.
Next week we will be testing all the knowledge we have learnt in our Innovation Station topic and learning all about why Easter is important to Christians.
Spellings
This week we are just focussing on red words (common exception words). Spellings to learn for a test this week are:
Ordinary, particular, peculiar, perhaps, popular, position, possess, possession, possible, potatoes.
Home learning (Love to Learn) this week is a newspaper task.
Can you find headlines in newspapers or online that are eye-catching and make you desperate to read more?
You can cut them out and stick them into your book or write down any you see, be as creative as you like when recording them.
Try and find at least 5.
