Weekly News! 15.3.24
What a fabulous week we have had in year 1. We have been working incredibly hard!
British Science Week!
To celebrate British Science Week, we discussed our ideas of what we think a scientist is and looked at some real scientists online. We then moved on to this year's ‘British Science Week’ theme of ‘time.’ Previously in our thematic topics we have looked at seasons, especially Autumn. However, using our previous knowledge of the seasons, we predicted what we may find outside on a walk around school in March, showing us that we are now in a different season to before! Take a look at our predictions and what we found out!
Read, Write Inc.
We been super busy in Read, Write, Inc! We have been practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to use our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words, because we all know you can't fred a red! We have been working hard on our writing and making sure all our letters are formed correctly. We have been really working on our big writes, keeping diaries at home, writing comic strips, writing postcards/cards, and making up stories at home can really support this. In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practice with these would be wonderful!
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Friday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the reading-coloured trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
This week we have been learning about division! We started the week by learning how to divide by sharing equally by making pizzas! We worked with our learning partners to see what we were dividing by, then get the correct number of pizza bases. Next, we had to look at the total number of each ingredient and count it out before sharing them equally onto the bases. We continued our learning by using sharing circles to equally share an amount, and then moved on to grouping amounts! For example;
Sharing (16 divided by 4)
Grouping (8 divided by 2)
Next week we will be looking at fractions!
Thematic
This week in our thematic topic ‘Explorers’ we have been looking at Computing! We learnt how to search the internet safely with the help of Digiduck! We learnt how to open a search engine and was able to type in a continent that we wanted to find out more information about. Once we looked at some interesting facts, we learnt how to open a new word document. We began typing our new facts, making sure we used the caps lock button to give the continent a capital letter! We continued our learning by learning what an algorithm is. We learnt this by taking pictures of our own building model, step by step. We then took it apart and used these step-by-step photos to re-create it. We then used our knowledge of algorithms to program beebots. We practiced this on a map of the UK, guiding our beebot to reach a chosen continent. We learnt about de-bugging our beebots and made sure we pressed the clear button! Some of us even named our beebots after the explorers we know; i.e. James Cook and programmed the beebot to find Australia! What a week we have had!
Next week we will be completing our explorers quiz and heading out of school on a local walk.
Art
In Art this week, we were shown how to make simple coil pots by first squashing small amounts of clay into sausages, then gently pushing the sausages forwards and backwards with flat hands until long thin tubes took shape. It was quite a tricky technique to master, so we had to show resilience each time we accidentally pressed too hard, and our tubes turned out more of a cuboid shape. When this happened, we had to start again, making sure to be more gentle in order to make more cylindrical tubes. We then took the tubes of clay and coiled them round and round to build a pot, have a look at our wonderful efforts.
Love to Learn
This week we would love for you to have a go at typing, preferably on a laptop or computer, if not a phone or ipad is fine. We would love for you to type a sentence about your favourite continent, with either an interesting fact or a reason why it’s your favourite! For example; Mrs Winchcombe’s favourite continent is North America because she loves Disney World!

Science Day Poster Competition
On Monday 11th March, we will be taking part in British Science Week here at Chilton. For British Science week, the theme this year is ‘Time’. You are invited to enter a competition to create a poster maybe showing how a certain type of technology has changed over time, or even the advancement of time-telling technology itself. Budding poster makers could also go futuristic, showing us how they think the world might look in years to come. You could perhaps look at nature – lifecycles, lifespans, evolution and hibernation – nature is full of timely topics. Your poster must only be A4 or A3 size. It will be scanned so it must be flat. There will be prizes in school and also our 5 best entries from across the school will be entered to a national competition. Here is what the judges will be looking for:
Creativity in approach – don’t be afraid to think outside the box and present your entry in a slightly different way.
Content – Clear, accurate and informative about a Science topic.
Effective communication – presented and communicated in an engaging way.
