One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 23.02.24

Welcome back to school everyone. We had an epic first week! Read on to find out what we got up to...

Read, Write Inc.

We have been really enjoying our new Read, Write, Inc groups! We have been practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to use our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words, because we all know you can't fred a red! We have been working hard on our writing and making sure all our letters are formed correctly. In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practice with these would be wonderful!

Reading

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Friday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the reading-coloured trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

This week we learnt our left and rights, working with our learning partner to describe the position of different objects in the classroom. Then we put them into practice by learning the Cha-Cha Slide. We had so much fun, take a look at our moves!

Then, we built on this by practicing how to follow and give directions on a treasure map using the words forwards and backwards...

Finally, we had to give and follow instructions for how to turn. We had to turn a quarter, half, three-quarters or a whole turn clockwise or anti-clockwise.  We had  to think carefully about the hands of the clock to help us with this!

Art

This week in art we began our Sculpture unit for the term. So far, we have been creating 2D works of art, but this week we took 2D strips of card and manipulated them to create 3D line sculptures inspired by some famous metal abstract sculptures!

In PSHE, we have been learning about British Values. We learnt about what it means  to be in a democracy and how everyone has a say. We spoke about the rule of law, what a law is and why they are important for keeping us safe. We learnt about Individual liberty and how grateful we should be for the freedom of choice in our country. Finally, we spoke about mutual respect and how to show it. Look at some of the great ideas we came up with!

Then, we learned about the 9 Protected Characteristics in the UK. In Year 1, we focussed on disability in particular. We were asked some questions including: can a person with no legs run? Can a person with no arms play the drums? Can a blind person become a professional skier? We then watched some videos from the Paralympic games and were amazed that despite their differences, people with disabilities can have equal opportunities to participate in sports and activities We then stepped into the shoes of a blind person and used our partner as a guide to help us complete blind bowling!

Thematic

We kicked off this terms topic Explorers with some Science. We learnt all about the different types of animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. We enjoyed a full afternoon of activities based around our learning. We sorted animals into their groups, we matched real life animal xrays with the correct animal, we took our time to compare three types of birds and we used books and handouts to find out more independently! Take a look at our work!

Love to Learn

We would love for you to choose an animal to research and make a poster about. Is it a mammal, reptile, amphibian, fish or bird? How do you know...Is it hot-blooded or cold-blooded? Does it live on land or water? How many legs does it have? Is it a herbivore, carnivore or omnivore? Draw a picture or print some photos and write some facts!

Other news

World Book Day Thursday 7th March 2024

This year's World Book Day theme will be bedtime stories / reading for pleasure.  We invite children to share their favourite bedtime story book on this day and if they wish, come to school dressed in their bedtime clothing!  Children are invited to dress up as their favorite character from a book if they prefer another option.  We would like to remind families that there is no expectation for you to spend money on costumes.  An enjoyment of reading and sharing a story is our main aim for World Book Day this year.

The Chilton Masked Reader

This year, we will share Chilton Masked Reader videos for World Book Day.  These videos will be created by our talented members of staff who will read a story without reveling their faces.  We hope our Chilton families will enjoy the stories and guess who the masked readers are! Links to these videos will be available on all school Blogs.

The Chilton Book Fayre will arrive on Monday 11th March and run until Friday 15th March outside the Year 5 classrooms. World Book Day book vouchers can we spent at the fayre.
