Welcome back to Year 5 and welcome to 2024. We have flown back into our learning and enjoyed our first week of the term and year! Here's what we've been up to this week:
English
This week, our Term 3 book, SE Durrant's 'Running on Empty', was introduced. In our Guided Reading lessons, we made predictions based on the front cover and blurb and clarify some key vocabulary to help us throughout the book. In our English lessons, we wrote an exciting setting description of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium just before the Men's 100m race was about to begin. Focusing on personification and ambitious vocabulary, we wrote paragraphs describing the stadium itself, the crowd and the athletes on the start line. Next week, we will be writing online news reports about Usain Bolt's 100m victory at London 2012.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been working on Place Value, looking at number sequences, term to term rules and our understanding of negative numbers. Next week, we will be rounding and adding and subtracting decimals.
Thematic Curriculum
In our afternoons this week, we have been learning about famous refugees in our PSHE lessons. First, we discussed what a refugee was and discussed some successful refugees and the problems they faced including Freddie Mercury, Rita Ora and Superman. We celebrated these refugees by creating collages of them. We then moved on to our 'Champion of Courage', Albert Einstein. We learnt about how Einstein, as a Jewish person, had to leave Germany when the Nazi Party came to power and how he showed such incredible bravery to do so. We researched Einstein and his accomplishments before writing a Wikipedia-style article about him. Next week, we will begin our Term 3 Thematic Unit 'Marvels of Matter'.
Love to Learn
For these week's Love to Learn task, please could children go on a Negative Number hunt! Find as many uses/examples of negative numbers around the house, the community, the town etc. and present the findings of your hunt in a fun and interesting way of your choice!
Dates to Remember:
2/2/24 – NSPCC Number day: Reception and KS1 to dress in anything related to number and Ks2 to dress as rock stars. £1 voluntary contribution for NSPCC.
2/2/24 – Number Day School Disco:
Ks2 – 4.30.5.30 drop off and collection from front of school. More details will be sent out by the Chilton Fundraisers later in the term.
6/2/24 – Online safety day Children dress to express, meaning they come in whatever they like, bright clothes, sportswear, club uniforms…. whatever makes them feel happy!
6/2/24 Curry and Quiz school fundraiser for adults (details to arrive in the New Year)
9/2/24 - Last day of term
19/02/24 - Term 4 starts for children
