We have had another brilliant week of learning in Year 1, the children have been working so hard!

Read on to see what we have been up to...

Read, Write Inc.

This week we have continued working hard in our Read, Write, Ink groups. We have been practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to used our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words because we all know you can't fred a red! In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practise with these would be wonderful!

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning all about number bonds within ten and number bonds to ten.  We explored addition by using a range of resources, practically investigating how to make ten using multi-link cubes, Numicon, part, part whole models and tens frames. We even learnt how to do this systematically, starting with the number one and finding it's partner, then moving onto two and it's partner and so on until we found all the possible ways of making ten!

 

 

 

 

 

Thematic Curriculum

This week we continued learning about History and how experiences in the past were similar and different to those we have today. We learnt more about jobs from the past that don't exist today due to modern inventions and combined this with what we learnt from our grandparents last week to help us with our first formal piece of writing! Our teachers were so impressed with our knowledge of how things change over time and our use of language around past and present. We ended the week with some cultural capital, learning all about a famous person from the past who lived in our home town. Augustus Pugin lived in Ramsgate in the 1800s. He was an artist and architect who played a pivotal role in the Gothic Revival. We looked at photos of the local buildings that he designed and discussed how they look different to the houses that we live in. We loved spotting the gothic architectural features - such as pointed arches, window mouldings and spires - and did a brilliant job of reproducing them in drawings, take a look!

 

Love to Learn

Next week we will be doing Design Technology in the afternoons, looking at cars from within living memory and how they have changed, building up to designing and making our own vehicle! To kick off the learning, we would love for you to draw a family member's car and label the parts that you know, like the wheels. For bonus points, think about what each part of the car does and why it has been designed and made that way.

 

Just a few messages for you...

- PE this term will be on a Wednesday.

- Doors will continue to open in the morning at 8:30am. Registration will be at the slightly earlier time of 8:45am (doors close at this time).

- Mrs Reavill will be teaching Team Peacock every Tuesday. 

Reading

Read at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading. (Except for Friday 15^th September)

Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to read both books, three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult every Friday. The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! IT IS IMPORTANT THAT READING FOLDERS GET PLACED IN THE COLOURED TRAYS BY THE LOCKERS AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE CLASSROOMS SO THAT WE CAN READ WITH THE CHILDREN AND ENSURE BOOKS GET CHANGED. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Dates to remember...

Later this term, we will be celebrating Harvest. As part of this, we would like to invite families in to watch our Harvest Assembly. 

Year 1 Harvest festival - Tuesday 3^rd October 9am

Please enter the school via the main school office.

As part of the celebrations, we will also be collecting food that we will be donating to Thanet Food Bank. We will be taking donations between Wednesday 27^th September and Monday 2nd October. If you are able to donate, the food bank accepts any tinned, jarred or packet foods that are in date.

In addition to this, as part of our celebrations all children will be entered into a raffle to win Captain Moo Man and Paulo, our reward bears from last year.
