One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 8.9.23

Wow, what a wonderful first week we have had together! We have danced, we have sung, we have smiled and laughed, and we have done lots of learning! We really are so lucky to have you in our classes this year - you are all super stars!

English

This week we have been working very hard in our Read, Write, Ink groups. We have been practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also done a super job of using our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words (common misconception words), because we all know you can't fred a red!

Maths

In Maths, we have been working on writing one more and one less and counting reliably up to 20. We had lots of practice counting slowly and carefully out loud, making sure to move the objects we were counting into a pile and then double checking our counting for accuracy. Take a look!

Thematic Curriculum

This week in P.S.H.E we spoke about why rules are important and what rules we have in school, including how to be safe, ready and respectful. We made our own class rules too, take a look! Next we discussed the Zones of Regulation and how to identify our feelings and share them with others through talking. We understand that it is okay to feel different emotions and learnt different ways to managed them and get ourselves back into a calm mood so that we are ready to learn. We also spoke about teamwork and played some games to practice communicating positively and celebrating each other's successes. It was so fun!

Love to Learn

To continue with our P.S.H.E. learning, this week we would like you to write down some songs that you listen to and draw a colour monster next to each song title to match the way the music makes you feel. If you would also like to write down some words to express your emotions, that would be fantastic (don't forget you can use the sound chart in your reading folder to help!).

Just a few messages for you...

PE this term will be on a Wednesday.

Doors will continue to open in the morning at 8:30am. Registration will be at the slightly earlier time of 8:45am (doors close at this time).

Mrs Reavill will be teaching Team Peacock every Tuesday.

Reading

Read at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading. (Except for Friday 15th September)

Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult every Friday. The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! IT IS IMPORTANT THAT READING FOLDERS GET PLACED IN THE COLOURED TRAYS BY THE LOCKERS AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE CLASSROOMS SO THAT WE CAN READ WITH THE CHILDREN AND ENSURE BOOKS GET CHANGED. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Dates to remember...

Friday 15th September – To start off our new thematic topic this term ‘My home, my town’ we would love to invite all grandparents in at 2.30. We would love for them to discuss what life was like for them as a child. How has technology changed? How has the environment has changed? What was their daily routine like? How does it differ from ours now? What were the vehicles like? If they would like to bring in any pictures from their past or an object to help them discuss these points that would be wonderful! We can’t wait to hear all about their lives growing up.

Have a fun filled family weekend, and we look forward to seeing you again on Monday!

Mrs Winchcombe, Miss Bryson and all the Year 1 team.
