English

In English this week, we have introduced the children to our next text, 'Way Home'.  The children have been making predictions about what they think will happen next, using their oracy skills to help explain.  We looked at the front cover to find clues.  From this, we wrote a setting description of a dank, ominous-looking alleyway.  The children have been excited to read more!  Today, they used their artistic skills to create a city-skyline.  Next week, the children will be learning and writing about homelessness. They will be writing in role at Shane, the main character in our class text and creating a fact file about homelessness.

Maths

To build on our existing understanding of place value, the children have been reading, writing and saying numbers up to ten million.  They have also identified the value of digits within numbers.  Most recently, the children have partitioned numbers into their respective values.  The children explored a range of number-based manipulatives to support their understanding.  Next week, we will be working closely to understand negative numbers in context, rounding and ordering.

Thematic Curriculum

PSHE

This week, we have re-established the Chilton Way rules with the children and they have reacted positively to the start of Year 6.  We discussed the importance of team work, playing games that demonstrate this skill, before considering why we should show good manners at home and at school.  We also reintroduced the zones of regulation to help the children gauge and deal with their emotions and feelings. We focused on the responsibility we all have for ourselves and the environment around us. Next week the children will be starting their new Thematic Curriculum topic: Darwin's Delights. The children will be learning about famous explorers. The children will also be learning about French foods this week.

Love to Learn

Your first Love to Learn task of the year is an important one: we would like you ALL to plan a one minute presentation that you will present to the rest of Year 6 on Thursday.   In this presentation, we would like you to state the reasons why you would make a good House Captain, Sports Crew member, Peer Mediator or, if you would not like any particular role this year, something about yourself.  Love to Learn is due in on Wednesdays each week and your teacher will give you a Love to Learn book for you.
