What a flower-tastic week we have had! Read on to find out what we have been up to!

Read, Write Inc
Each week we will be focusing on a different text as a whole class just before lunchtime. Each Friday we will be doing some creative writing based on that text. This week, we have been reading Gorilla and on Friday we wrote about our favourite animal. We tried hard to use adjectives to describe our animal in our writing.
The children have been continuing to work hard in their RWI sessions this week. When reading we have been encouraging children to spot the special friend in the word before sounding it out (Fred talking). For example in the word claw, they would spot the ‘aw’ first, then Fred talk (c-l-aw) and then say the word (claw).
In RWI, children read the same story several times. This is important as it helps children to become familiar with the story and the words and help to improve their fluency when reading. This is something we would encourage when reading at home too. This will really help with their confidence when reading and can also make answering questions about what they have read easier too.
In each reading folder, there is a sound card and list of red words. Any practise with these at home would be extremely helpful and support your child’s reading and writing at home.
Maths
This week it has been Money sense week! We have been making sense of money by; looking at what money is, looking at how money can be earnt and about the difference between needs and wants; that people may not always be able to have the things they want. We also discussed how money needs to be looked after and how we can do this. (different ways of doing this)
Next week, we will be starting to look at division!
Thematic Curriculum
This week in our thematic lessons we have been focussing on Science. We started the week by looking at real plants, labelling their parts and learning their jobs roles. We moved our learning on by looking at how plants can grow in a range of places and how they can survive the different weather conditions! We ended the week by looking at the difference between evergreen and deciduous trees. We went outside and identified a range on leaves to help us identify which type of trees we have at Chilton! We have also planted the plants we used in lessons, in our year one outdoor area, please take a look, but do not touch (As we have been teaching the children this at school) We are also continuing to grow our sunflowers, mung beans and radishes, which are coming along lovely!
