One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! w/b 12.6.23

What a wonderful, hot and fun-filled week we have had!

Read, Write Inc

We cannot put into words how proud we are of all of our year 1 children and the progress they have and continue to make in their reading. When reading we have been encouraging children to spot the special friend in the word before sounding it out (Fred talking). For example in the word play, they would spot the ‘ay’ first, then Fred talk (p-l-ay) and then say the word (play).

In RWI, children read the same story several times. This is important as it helps children to become familiar with the story and the words and help to improve their fluency when reading. This is something we would encourage when reading at home too. This will really help with their confidence when reading and can also make answering questions about what they have read easier too.

In each reading folder, there is a sound card and list of red words. Any practise with these at home would be extremely helpful and support your child’s reading and writing at home.

Maths

This week we have started looking at multiplication. This week we have been focussing on arrays. We needed to find how many groups of a certain amount there were. We worked so, so hard on this and are really getting the hang of it! Next week, we will be continuing to look at multiplication.

Thematic

This week we started our new topic, ‘Staying Alive!’ to start it off we went on a local walk, we looked out for different plants, animals and trees we could spot. We then discussed our big question, ‘Are these things alive?’ and looked at a range of pictures of animals, plants and objects. We planted a range of seeds, including; sunflowers, mung beans and radishes outside of Team Aqua’s classroom. We also completed our Art Part, where we looked carefully at plants and used watercolour pastels to draw them, inspired by Georgia O’Keefe.

Love to Learn:

This week we would for you to go on a walk and take note/or pictures of all the animals, trees and plants you can see. This can be recorded in any way you wish.

Summer Fair information

We will be holding our annual school summer fair on Friday 23rd June from 3.15-5.oo pm. The event, run by our amazing Chilton Fundraisers, is a wonderful community event for all our staff and families to enjoy.

This year we will have a wide range of fun activities for you all to enjoy including;

Bouncy Castle, Inflatable bungee course, Go-Karts, Ice cream van, soak the teacher, beat the keeper, hook a duck, tin can alley, nerf gun target, raffles, tombola and much more.

Please can the decorated white bags be brought back into school on Friday 23rd June, to be sold at the fair.

If anyone in our parent community would like to hold a stall of their own, whether it be to sell crafts, plants, cakes or anything similar please email Mrs Cheshire at hannah.cheshire@chiltonprimary.co.uk. We will be charging £10 a pitch.

Sports Day!

After a successful Viking Games at the end of last term, it is time to celebrate… SPORTS DAY!

To commemorate the Women’s World Cup 2023, each class Team will represent a country that will be present in the competition; our Celebration of Sport will take place over two days on the Key Stage Two playground and field:

Wednesday 5th July – Reception and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) from 9:15

Monday 10th July – Key Stage 2 (Years 3 - 6) from 9:15

Children will be encouraged to wear brightly coloured clothing (any colour) or their normal PE kit. They will wear this to school and keep it on all day.

If the weather is forecast to be hot and sunny, please remember water bottles, hats and sun cream. After registration at normal times, children will walk up to the Key Stage Two playground / field. Feel free to cheer as the classes are announced! Children will stay with their classes and will take part in a carousel of activities, applying the skills they have learnt this year in their PE lessons to the competition for their House Teams. They will move through each numbered event in order. At the end of the carousel of activities, children will congregate in their classes in sections on the field. There will then be an opportunity for sprinting races for each year group for both boys and girls to find out the fastest runners in that year. Spectators will be welcome to assemble on the edge of the field to watch and cheer. This year, we would like to continue our Leavers’ Race where children in Year Six will participate in a fun Chilton Challenge, we like to think it’s a secret but they know what’s coming….. and will therefore need a change of clothing and a towel!

We will then move over to the playground where awards will be given. This year, staff will be looking out for children who have demonstrated the School Games values (Self belief, Determination, Honesty, Team Work, Passion and Respect) and special awards will be given out to those children who have demonstrated them. The Sports Day Cup will also be awarded to the winning House after which the children will head off back to class. We anticipate the morning being finished by 12:00 at the latest.

We hope you can join us in celebrating our year of sport and thank you for your continued support.
