For Love to Learn this week, your teachers have set a MyMaths task and MyOn challenge (read the book The Shocking truth about Electricity).  Access MyOn here - https://www.myon.co.uk/index.html.  The children are to read this book and then take a quiz on it.  We will be learning about electricity next term in our afternoon lessons.

Blue Peter’s Amazing Authors Competition

Blue Peter is giving a young writer the money can't buy prize of getting their story brought to life by children's author, Tom Fletcher. 

Children will be asked to write an original short story, or poem (under 400 words) about adventure; thinking too about exciting characters at the heart of it.  The winning story will be made into an audio book voiced by Tom Fletcher and be animated to be shown on Blue Peter and CBeebies Bedtime Stories.  They will go behind the scenes to experience the book publication and animation process, receive a printed copy of their story, a framed still from the animation and an orange competition winner’s badge.

Sponsored Walk for The Royal Marsden – Monday 20^th February 

You may be aware that one of our children has spent the last three and a half years being treated for leukaemia. That treatment has now finished and we would like to celebrate this momentous occasion and mark the end of a difficult time for part of our community by running a sponsored walk in aid of The Royal Marsden. This will be held on the first day back in Term 4 – Monday 20^th February. 

Children are invited to come in to school wearing their own clothes and we would encourage them to choose the brightest colour clothing that they have. We would also recommend wearing trainers! 

We are going to walk in a relay from the school, differing distances depending on the children’s ages, over Chalk Hill and to the Viking Ship and back (the youngest children will walk the shortest distances and so on). 

We are asking for a voluntary donation or for the children to voluntarily collect what they can to be donated to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. 

We hope that this will be a celebratory occasion as well as raising some funds for an excellent and much needed cause! 

From next term, Year 6's main PE lesson will be on Wednesdays; Sports Project will swap to Fridays.  Children should wear appropriate PE kit (with a plain white top) on Wednesdays and trainers with school uniform on Fridays.

 

This week in English, the children enjoyed watching the Bafta-winning commentary of snakes vs iguana (feel free to take a look on YouTube!).  We used the techniques employed by Sir David Attenborough to capture the attention of the reader, including using figurative language and powerful verbs.  We even listened to Brian Moses' poem about walking his iguana and performed it to the rest of the class:

In Maths, the children worked on converting units of measurement (for example cm to m; grams to kg; ml to L) and, by the end of the week, solved problems relating to this.  We very much enjoyed seeing all the children dress up for Number Day to raise money for the NSPCC and we thank all the parents who were able to join us for our Maths afternoon.

Next week, there will be a focus on RE, where the children will learn about how the Qur'an influences Muslims.  Later in the week, children will learn to translate from French different food and drink.    We will be focussing on pronunciation and constructing simple phrases in French.
