Maths

This week we have been learning all about multiplication. We learned some new vocabulary (times). We started by looking at equal groups of objects. We counted how many groups there were and wrote it down. Then we counted how many objects were in each group and wrote it down. Next, we counted how many objects there were altogether and wrote our answer. It looked something like this:

3 groups of 2 = 6

Over the course of the week we were answering trickier number sentences. We practiced in different ways. Our favourite was when we drew circles on the table in whiteboard pens and created equal groups of cubes.

We moved from labelling pictures of equal groups to answering number sentences ourselves.

 

RWI

We have continued to practice reading ‘green words’ by Fred talking (“Fred in your head”). Some of these are real words and some are ‘alien’ words (nonsense words). We have continued reading our phonics books and writing the key green words from the story. We have been holding a sentence from the story book in our heads and then writing them in our books. We enjoyed doing our ‘big write’ this week (a writing activity based on the book we have read.)

 

Topic

This week in topic we have started learning about some famous explorers. We learned about Marco Polo, a merchant who spent three years travelling along The Silk Road from Venice to China. We also learned about Captain James Cook who led voyages around New Zealand and Australia. Then we learned about Charles Darwin, a naturalist on board the HMS Beagle. We became explorers for the afternoon ourselves. We imagined that we were on a voyage to Chilton School Field – a place where no one has been before. The wildlife on the school field has never before been seen. We drew pictures of the animals we discovered and labelled them with adjectives so that when we send our findings ‘back home’, people would have a good idea what the animals looked like. As we were the first people to ever discover these animals, we got to name them too. We came up with some very funny, silly and clever names for the animals.

We also learned about Bessie Coleman, the first black American woman to become a pilot. She was rejected from every flying school that she applied to in America but she didn’t give up on her dreams. Instead, she moved to France and trained there. She worked hard, saving all of her money to buy her very own plane. She put on air shows to earn money to fly her planes. We then spoke about our own hopes and dreams.

 

Love 2 Learn

Can you create a fact file about a famous explorer of your choice? Include their name, when they lived, where they went, what they discovered/achieved and a drawing/photo of them. You can think about the explorers that we have learnt about e.g. Charles Darwin, James Cook, Marco Polo or you can learn about an explorer of your choice.

 

Next week we will be thinking about…

Animals!

In topic we are learning about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.
