Year 5 have had another excellent week! Here is what we have been up to:
Maths
In maths this week we have been learning how to add and subtract fractions. We began by adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominators, before moving on to add and subtract fractions with denominators that were different but multiples of the same number. Next week we will continue our learning on fractions by moving on to learn how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions and multiply fractions by whole numbers.
English
This week we have continued our learning on the Highwayman. We finished reading the poem on Monday and then hot seated the characters to find out how they felt when they witnessed the events on that fateful night, including Tim the ostler. We then used all of this information to write a letter to a judge, presenting all of our evidence in a balanced argument to decide whether or not the soldiers were justified in their actions towards Bess and the Highwayman.
Next week we will move on to look at another text by Alfred Noyes, The Lady of Shalott. Within our learning we will use figurative language to describe the characters and the setting.
Topic
In the afternoons this week we have continued our learning about materials. For our DT unit we have been investigating the best type of material for a class blanket, using questionnaires to gather information. We then designed these based on the results of our questionnaires.
Next week, we will be using our designs to sew a square each which will be put together to create a class blanket. This will be kept in our book corner to show our work.
Home Learning
This week, we would like the children to investigate the different types of materials around the house and their purpose. This information can be presented in any creative way!
