Children from Chilton Primary have enjoyed an out of this world experience trip to the cosmos.

The Year 5 group travelled under a canopy of stars as the universe unfolded before them on a visit to a planetarium at the Science Museum in London.

It was the perfect launch pad for their trip into space for their new topic Stargazers.

At the museum they also explored a large machine that creates lightning bolts, as well as taking part in a range of hands-on experiments in the ‘wonderlab’ and other workshops that included discovering the formation of crystals in a variety of solutions.

Teacher Tom Abel said: “It was wonderful to see the children's faces during our day at the Science Museum. For some of them it was their first visit to London and enjoying the amazing things happening all around them was a fantastic way to create a memorable learning experience.”

Pupil Molly spokes for her year group when she said: “We had the best day.” She added: “I loved the wonderlab and really enjoyed racing my classmates using the 'pulley chairs'.”

During the Stargazers topic, the children will explore the text 'The Jamie Drake Equation', create their own aliens and planets, complete a variety of creative writing opportunities including character and setting descriptions. They will also have learn how to use various artistic techniques to create images inspired by the magical aurora borealis lights phenomenon.

Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire said: “Educational visits like this are the perfect way to engage children on their learning journey. As well as experiencing new educational ideas, it is also an important social experience to help broaden their horizons.”
