We have had another fab week in Year 2! Team Peacock and Team Azure have absolutely blown us away tis week with their maturity and enthusiasm as we settle into the full swing of Year 2 life! We've had an absolutely jam-packed week, starting our first PE lesson, Sports Slam, and enjoying our first music lesson of the year! The children have been incredible in facing all our new and exciting challenges.
English
We have been reviewing and practising sounds we have already learnt while also introducing some exciting new sounds! The children have been absolutely brilliant at spotting their special friends, Fred Talking, and reading words with great confidence.
Year 2 are so great at using their Fred fingers to help write words in their book (but not a re - we have to know it in our head!!!) This week, we have also been using some super adjectives to describe what we love about being in Year 2. The creativity they’ve displayed in their writing has made us so proud.
In Mrs Winchcombe’s English group, the children continue learning about the story "Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Book?" They have been describing the characters in such vivid detail, bringing the story to life with their imaginative descriptions. WOW - We have absolutely seen their understanding grow as they engage with the booK.
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Some children have been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready.
Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
We continue to explore the exciting world of place value all the way up to 100!
The children have been truly fab as we solidify our understanding using tens and ones – a solid foundation for their mathematical journey! We have had loads of fun comparing numbers using the symbols <, >, and =. A little reminder: Charlie the Crocodile always enjoys munching on the BIGGEST number he can find!
As part of our learning activities, we then took on the challenge of ordering numbers in ascending and descending order. The children did brilliantly, identifying the smallest and largest numbers and everything else just falls into place - simple, right?!
To round off the week, we challenged ourselves by partitioning two-digit numbers in various ways using a part-whole model. Who knew the endless possibilities for combining numbers to create a single total?
Thematic
We have been learning all about George Forrest, a remarkable botanist, which we found a rather big coincidence. The children have truly embraced their roles as budding botanists during this unit, taking on the challenges of scientists as they explore our school grounds for their very own discoveries. Have a look...
During our plant hunt, the children engaged enthusiastically with different types of flowering plants. They showcased their growing knowledge by identifying a variety of species, demonstrating their understanding of what seeds require to thrive — and what they do not!
We had an absolutely lovely afternoon exploring a range of fiction books, non-fiction texts, and poems centred around plants and our environment. This exploration not only sparked their imaginations but also allowed them to uncover fascinating facts about the botanical world.
Love to Learn
For love to learn this week we would love you to go on your very own plant hunt – take pictures or draw all your amazing discoveries. I wonder if you are able to name the plants you discover.
Be creative and have fun!
