One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 6.9.24

What a fantastic first week in Year 1! Take a look at what we have been getting up to 😊

Maths

This week in maths we have been looking at number and place value! At the beginning of the week, we used number lines to help us find 1 less and 1 more than a given number. We even challenged ourselves and even had missing numbers on our number lines! Later in the week we learnt to compare quantities using words such as more than, less than and equal to. We have also been comparing numbers using the < > and = symbols.

Next week in maths the children will be continuing their skills of number and place value using number lines.

Read, Write Inc.

This week in Read, Write Inc. We have met our new RWI teachers. We have been reviewing our sounds and working so hard phonetically reading words. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.

Reading

Today the children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.

Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly. Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home.

There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.

If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Home Learning

This week the children have a slip in their books for their home learning. To help reduce paper, from next week the home learning will only be available to see on the blog.

For this week’s learning we would like the children to decorate their own Love 2 Learn book anyway they wish.

Here is a slip below that you will find in their Love 2 Learn book.

On Wednesday the children will have a history lesson, if possible, we would love to have a baby photo of them to stick into their books. Additionally, if you have any family photos we could use to display in our outdoor home corner we would be very grateful if you could bring them in on Monday.

Please can Love 2 Learn books be returned each Wednesday please.

PSHE

On Tuesday we read the story ‘Rufus goes to school’ this made us think about our behaviours in school, our school rules and the Chilton Way. We spoke about our behaviour cards, the point system and discussed when Rufus, in the story, would receive any behaviour cards or house points. On Wednesday we read ‘The Colour Monster’ and linked it to the Zones of Regulation. We discussed what the Zones of Regulation are and how to use them to help us name our emotions, take responsibility for our thoughts and feelings, and manage them throughout the day. On Thursday we discussed our Chilton values of Respect, Equality. Courage and Kindness, what mean and the importance of showing these values every day. To end the week we read the Colour Monster: The Feelings Doctor and the Emotions Toolkit Book by Anna Llenas. We made our very own emotions toolkit to help us when our emotions get entangled. We also discussed our sense of empathy of others’ feelings and how we can help others and respond to their feelings.

Next week we will be starting our thematic learning ‘My home my town’. In history the children will be learning about how we have changed since being a baby.
