Weekly News! 01.12.2023
We have had another incredible week in Year 3. Check out what we have been learning.
English
In English this week we have begun to read a new book called ‘The Princess and the White Bear King’ and have enjoyed looking at the beautiful winter settings. We began the week by creating beautiful art-work of a winter setting before writing a setting description using expanded noun phrases, past tense and sentence openers such as ‘As the glittering snowflakes fell,”. We then moved on to plan a five-part narrative before writing the opening, focusing on using a range of ambitious adjectives to describe the setting of our story.
Next week we will continue to write our narratives. We will focus on using verbs and adverbs to write the build-up of our story, choosing appropriate vocabulary to build suspense and tension when writing our problem, using a range of verbs to move action on to write our resolution and using a range of sentence openers to write our endings.
Maths
This week in Maths we have been learning how to measure lengths with accuracy in mm, cm and m. We learnt that 10mm=1cm and 100cm=1m. We focussed on accuracy when measuring and drawing straight lines with a ruler, including remembering to start on 0. We then applied our learning to solve problems using these skills, comparing lengths in different units of measurement.
Next week we will continue our learning on measure by learning how to measure mass and volume. We will focus on converting between grams and kilograms and millilitres and litres, before applying these skills to solve problems.
Fact of the Week
Next week our fact of the week is:
7 X 3 = 21
SPaG
This week in our punctuation and grammar lessons (PAG) we have been learning about subordinating conjunctions and how they can be used to create complex sentences. We used the acronym ISAWAWABUB to help us remember the conjunctions and then used these at the beginning of the sentences.
In spelling we learnt how to spell words ending in -ture, such as adventure and mature. We also continued to practice our red words (words that don’t follow regular spelling patterns).
Please practice these spellings for revision next week:
-
Adventure
-
Furniture
-
Temperature
-
Creature
-
Mature
Thematic
This week we have continued our Thematic Unit of ‘Feel the Force, See the Light’ by beginning to study light. We began the week by defining the words opaque, transparent and translucent. We then moved on to group different items into these categories. On Tuesday, we learnt how light reflects off of different surfaces and their purposes, such as a hi-vis jacket. Finally, on Wednesday, we learnt about the harmful effect that UV rays can have on our eyes, before designing a pair of sunglasses to protect our eyes.
Next week, we will be learning how shadows are made. We will begin the week by going on a shadow hunt around the school, and then designing and making our own shadow puppets. On Wednesday, we will be celebrating our learning with our shadow puppet show, before completing our end of unit quiz.
