Year 3 Weekly News 6.1.23
Happy New Year to you all! The Year 3 children have returned to school with fantastic attitudes and have already been working hard this week!
Here is what we have been up to.
English
In English this term we will be reading stories written by the talented children’s author Anthony Browne. We have started this week by reading ‘Into the Forest’. In guided reading we have enjoyed retelling the story so far using actions. Here are some pictures of us performing our reader's theatre.
In writing, we have been learning to write diary entries that show viewpoint. We have written in role as characters from the story, learnt to show ambitious emotive language and how to use the 4 sentence types (statements, questions, commands and exclamation sentences) in a diary entry.
Maths
In maths this week, we have been learning about place value and number. We have learnt to partition numbers in different ways. For example, instead of just partitioning 283 in a standard way like this, 283 = 200 + 80 + 3, they have partitioned in different ways such as 283 = 150 +50 + 40 + 40 + 3 or 283 = 100 + 100 + 83. We then moved on to use comparison signs (< > and =) to compare 2 and 3 digit numbers. Lastly, we ordered numbers from highest to lowest or vice versa. The children have used diennes (base ten) blocks all week to help them with this learning. Next week we will be learning about how to measure perimeter of 2d shapes and about different types of angles; right angle, obtuse and acute.
Topic
Our new thematic unit for this term is called ‘How my body works’. We will be doing lots of science learning, plus some technology and global citizenship learning. We began our unit with our ‘hook’ afternoon where the children drew around someone’s body on large paper and then they drew all of the body parts they thought were inside a human body. We also completed some circuit training exercises such as step ups, sprints, hooping, skipping, push ups, toe touches, leapfrog. Here are some photos of us…
Next, the children completed the ‘art part’ for this unit. We made a skeleton picture using cotton buds and white pastels and had a look at how to make x ray pictures. Next week, we will be learning about living and non-living things, how animals and plants get their food, about what types of food animals need to eat and about how to eat a balance diet.

Words to learn:
gnome, gnat, knife, knight, knot, knit, kneel, knuckle, knew, know

Love to Learn
This week, we would like you to find out about healthy eating and make a poster to encourage children to eat more healthily. Below is a helpful website to look at if you need some ideas.
