English

In English this week we have been learning about imagery in poetry. This is when poets create images in poetry using poetic devices such as figurative language. The figurative language techniques we have learnt about this week are similes, metaphors and personification. The children have written some wonderful poetry using all of these figurative language skills about winter. They were very skilful at this, well done Year 4!

In our reading for pleasure session this week, it was lovely to see the children bring in a favourite book from home and share them with their peers. Here we are with our books…

      

Next week, we will be continuing to learn about poetry; this time learning about rhyme, rhythm, acrostic poetry, haikus and limericks.

Maths

This week we have finished off our statistics learning, finding out how to interpret data in tables. We then moved on to learning about perimeter and area. The children learnt that to find the perimeter of a rectilinear shape they had to add up the length of all of the sides. They tried very hard with some challenging problems that involved finding the length of missing sides and this flower bed problem below.

When finding area, the children have learnt to do this by counting the number of squares inside a shape and they know that area is measured in cm².

Next week in maths we will be learning to convert and compare units of length (cm, m and km) and mass (g and kg).

Thematic curriculum

This week we have begun our science learning part of our ‘Walk like an Egyptian’ themed curriculum. The children have learnt about the 4 different types of teeth that humans have: incisors, canines, molars and premolars.

The children learnt what each type of tooth does. To investigate this, we ate different types of food and watched in the mirror to see what our different teeth were doing. Here are some photos of us doing this…

We also found out about the digestive system this week. We learnt about the journey of a piece of food through the digestive system (mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, rectum) and what happens in each part of the digestive system. We labelled diagrams of the digestive system.

Love to Learn 

This week’s Love to Learn task is an English one. We would like you to write some figurative language sentences about the desert and the sun. Please can 2 sentences be personification, 2 contain similes and 2 contain metaphors. Look above for help on what each type of figurative language is.
