I am delighted to share that we have had another super week in Year 2! Our days have been jam-packed with exciting activities and experiences that have engaged the children. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm shining through, and they continue to impress us with their willingness to give everything a go!
English
This week we have concluded in our English learning journey around the story of The Gruffalo's Child. It has been a fantastic week filled with learning, creativity, and plenty of fun! Our exploration began with an important punctuation skill: using commas in a list. The children have really embraced this concept, applying it to their writing with great enthusiasm. Following that, we delved into the world of imperative verbs, discovering how to use those 'bossy' words effectively to craft clear and precise instructions. This skill will serve them well in future writing tasks.
Additionally, we focused on time fronted adverbials, enhancing our ability to sequence events and provide clarity in our writing. The culmination of these lessons resulted in a delightful activity where the children wrote their very own recipes for a pie meant for the Gruffalo's Child! Their imaginations ran wild as they filled their dishes with some truly imaginative (and gross!) ingredients. It was a joy to see them sharing their creations with one another, all while applying the skills we have been working on.
Year 2 are continuing to practice mastering their 2 and 3 sounds. It’s been fantastic to see their progress, especially as they start using these sounds seamlessly in their writing. Their enthusiasm is truly contagious!
It would be great if you could continue to encourage them to practise these sounds at home. Your support really does make a difference! Simple activities, like sounding out words together during reading or playing fun phonics games, can really reinforce what they’re learning in class.
Also, I’d like to mention the 'red words' that our Year 2 pupils are tackling. These can be a bit tricky, but they’ve been working hard to get the hang of them—even when they can’t 'Fred' them! Your encouragement with these words at home will really help boost their confidence and learning.
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Some children have been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319
For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader
Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
I am excited to share the amazing progress our children have made in their division skills this week! They have truly impressed us with their understanding and application of sharing equally.
We began our week with concrete resources, using objects to demonstrate division and help the children grasp the concept of sharing fairly. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they worked with these resources! After gaining confidence, we transitioned to drawing representations of division, which further solidified their understanding.
The highlight of our week was applying their skills to challenging word problems and engaging in various problem-solving activities. It has been rewarding to witness the children tackle these tasks with determination and creativity. They have also perfected the skill of writing division number sentences, which is a significant milestone in their mathematical journey.
Thematic
In Thematic this week we have continued our learning on The Great Fire of London and the role the firefighters had.
We've been exploring the various jobs that existed during that time, discovering some rather interesting (and, dare I say, a few quite disgusting!) professions people held in the past. The children have shown great curiosity as we've discussed what it was like to be a firefighter during those days, drawing comparisons to the heroic firefighters we see today.
A highlight of the week was a very special visit from a fire engine and firefighters! Unfortunately, our visit was cut short as the fire crew had to rush off to an emergency, but it provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to see a modern fire engine up close and understand its importance in our community.
Love to Learn
This week the children have been introduced to the Movember Chilton challenge. Grownups can help children vote for who they would like to see grow a crazy moustache by liking the photo on Instagram or Facebook.
For home learning this week we would love to see the children design a crazy moustache for themselves! Be creative and have fun!
