Year 4 Weekly News 11.6.21
We hope that you all had a lovely half term! The children have come back with a fantastic attitude and, despite being very hot, have taken part in some excellent learning this week!
Maths
In maths this week we have been learning about volume and capacity. The children have learnt that volume is measured in millilitres, litres, centilitres or megalitres. They have learnt that 1 litre is the same as 1000ml and used this knowledge to convert between units of volume. E.g. 3500ml = 3 1/2 l 250ml = 1/4l 4 tenths of a litre = 400ml 8 litres = 8000ml. We have also had another go at scaling problems involving volumes (the last time we tried this in October, we found it quite tricky!) and the children have definitely improved their multiplication and division skills and were much more successful this time round. For example, if the children had the ingredient list for 24 cakes, what would be the ingredients for 6 cakes? They would need to divide all of the ingredients by 4 to find the answer. We finished off the week by reading measurements on measuring containers such as jugs, cylinders and beakers. Here are some photos of us exploring the volume of water in these containers.
English
For the first 2 weeks of this term we are learning how to write explanation texts. We have begun reading a new text called 'The Pebble in my Pocket: A History of Earth' by Meredith Hooper. This book tells the story of a pebble through history beginning 480 million years ago when it forms as hardened lava from a volcano. The book also tells us about the evolution of living things on Earth. This week, we have written about volcanoes, learning how to write an introduction and how to include complex and compound sentences in an explanation text.
RE
In RE this week the children have begun to learn about Buddhism for the first time. They have learnt about the Buddha and his journey to enlightenment, and about the festivals of Vesak and The ploughing Festival that Buddhists celebrate.
Computing
In computing this week, the children have learnt about different connections, what a network is and how a network switch can make sending messages through a network more effective. They have also begun to explore what a server is in a network. We shall be building on this next week.
Love to Learn
This term, we will be doing a lot of science as the children are catching up on any science that they missed in the lockdowns either this year or last year. In Year 4, we will be learning about Living Things and their Habitats, Forces and Animals. We will be beginning by learning about Living Things and their Habitats. For this week's Love to Learn challenge we would like you to find out about the groups that animals can be classified into: mammals, fish, birds, amphibians and reptiles. What are the key features of each of these groups e.g. mammals give birth to live young and are warm-blooded, and can you name some animals that go in each group. You could also find or draw pictures of animals in each group.
Messages
We still have some children who are not bringing a drink to school and they are very thirsty in this hot weather. Please ensure that your child brings a water bottle every day.
The Sports Project is continuing for the rest of this term so children can still come to school in PE kits on a Wednesday if they wish.
