One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 25.9.20

It's been a busy week in Year 4! The children have been showing some incredible learning behaviour and have been producing some amazing work.

Here is what we have been up to this week:

English

This week we finished our book Gregory Cool. The children have continued to learn how to show viewpoint in diary entries and letters using emotive language and by giving reasons for their feelings. We have now started a unit on non-fiction writing. We have been exploring an information text called '4 Reasons to visit Tobago', extracting facts from this and using them to write own own factual sentences about Tobago. The focus has been on using the 4 different sentence types; statements, questions, commands and exclamation sentences.

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning to subtract. We have used an empty number line to enable us to chunk the number we are subtracting - this will help us in the future with our mental subtraction methods. We have also used the column method to subtract numbers with up to 5 digits; solving problems using our understanding of this method. The children have astounded us with their skill with this method - they are incredible at it! They are especially good at regrouping (old fashioned exchanging as we used to call it)! Well done Year 4! In one of our maths sessions this week we went outside and solved subtraction calculations that were hidden around the playground. Here are some photos of our outdoor maths:

PSHE

In PSHE this week, we have been learning about how a healthy lifestyle and routine impacts positively on our wellbeing. We thought about how different our lifestyles were in lockdown - lots of late nights, being able to get up later, eating snack foods more often, more screen time - and how these have had to change now we are back at school. We have discussed the importance of getting enough sleep whilst we are at school so that are brains are ready to do their best learning the next day. We learnt about how having a healthy diet, drinking lots of water, getting regular exercise and reducing screen time can all help us to feel happy. We also thought about the importance of hygiene and caring for our teeth. The children engaged in some excellent discussions abut how all of these factors will promote a healthy and happy life. Here are the children exploring the nutritional content of some food items:

Messages

Unfortunately due to the current COVID situation, for safety reasons the children are not able to use the water fountain at school to have a drink of water. Therefore it is essential that the children please bring a water bottle in everyday.

Please try to read with your child as often as possible at home and ensure that they bring their reading record into school every Friday so that it can be checked by their teacher.

Many thanks,

The Year 4 Team
