Weekly News – 24th January 2020
In Maths this week, we have looked at multiplication and division. We practised a range of methods to refresh our knowledge and then moved on to understanding the associative and distributive laws of multiplication. We also looked at a number of different contextual problems to show our understanding.
In English, we were shocked as Fritz’s story crossed over with the main story when the mysterious Dr Kalmenius appeared in the tavern. We drew and then wrote a character description of him based on our inference skills from the book. We were then introduced to Sir Ironsoul, an amazing clockwork figure with a dark ability. We wrote a piece focusing on emotive language based on Karl’s and Dr Kalmenius’ view of Sir Ironsoul as well as Sir Ironsoul’s view of himself.
In our afternoons this week, we have been practising our Ice Palace performances (the final performance will be at 2:30pm on Friday 31st January 2020). We have also been working on our Topic Egypt unit, learning about and designing our own death masks.
We are still encouraging the children to play as much Times Tables Rockstars (ttrockstars.com) at home. When logging in, please select ‘Chilton Primary School, Ramsgate’. Children’s log ins are the same as their MyMaths log ins (please see your teacher if you need your child’s log in).
Online book club!
So that the children can share their reading choices we have created an online book club. When they have read a book that they have loved, they can log in and write a review on our site. The link to this site is below:

The children will be given a password so only the children and families of Year 4 can view comments.
We can't wait to see what they are reading!
Home Learning
For home learning this week, the children need to produce an entry to this year’s ‘The Speaker’ competition. The title is:
A world in Crisis- Climate Change.
Children will need to prepare a two minute speech on the topic. It is up to them how they interpret the title.
Written presentations need to be handed to Miss Barrow by Monday 27th January
There is also a MyMaths task set this week for home learning.
