Well done on making it to the end of another week!

All of year 1 would also love to say a massive thank you for all your generous donations to Children in Need. We've had a lovely comfy day of learning in our PJs.

Maths

We have had a fun week of learning about money! We started off by looking at the different coins and notes and discussed their values. We used the numicon to help us understand their values and to count up the total of coins in a jar. We then moved on to counting coins in a jar when the coins were of the same value (this helped us to count in our 2s, 5s and 10s). When we found the total, we found a coin we could exchange it with for example in a jar with two 10p coins, we counted 10, 20 and found the 20p coin to exchange. 

English

In RWI this week we are continuing to focus set 2 and set 3 sounds. We have been practising looking for special friends in words to help us to decode when reading. We have also practised reading multisyllabic words (words with more than one syllable), we often have to tweak how we pronounce these words. We use the same method of looking for special friends (within the syllable), fred talking then blending.

PSHE

This week we have continued our learning about kindness. We listened to a story about two friends who had a falling out, discussing why the friends behaved the way they did and how they might have been feeling. Falling out is common and normal as we don’t always want to do or agree on the same things. We discussed using the Ready, Steady Go technique to help resolve conflicts.

Ready- both people need to be calm before discussing.

Steady- take turns to explain their point of view and how the situation made you feel.

Go- find a solution which is fair for both.

Then we learnt about what we can do when someone tells us they are sad. An important part of being a good friend is understanding how others might be feeling and that this might be different to how we are feeling. We explored the signs of different emotions, for example we would know that someone is feeling angry if they are clenching their fists or shouting. We role played different emotions and discussed the signs. This helps us to develop empathy for our friends.

Love to learn

Thank you so much for your beautifully designed love to learn books, we shared them in class today so everyone could see the hard work the children put into them. 

Your task this week is to make rubbings of the different coins and write their value underneath. If you wanted to challenge yourself, you could practise your exchanging. For example you could make a rubbing of two 5p coins then show that this is equal to one 10p coin. 

Next week we are going to start our topic of Weather Around the World. If you wanted to, you could discuss the following vocabulary with your child:

Notices

• Children are being offered a flu vaccination on Monday 23rd November. If you would like your child to receive this, please follow the link on the email you would have received in relation to the vaccination. You need to have registered your child by Wednesday 18th November.
• The winners of the house points competition were the BLUE Vikings! Well done team Vikings you earnt a massive 5,599 house points and your reward is a non school uniform day on Friday 20th November. If your child is part of the blue Viking team, they will be able to come into school next Friday in their home clothes.
• Please can we remind you that children are now being asked to come into school wearing their PE kits on a Tuesday. We will have our PE lessons on the top field so please ensure they have appropriate footwear. 
• It is very important that children do not bring in anything from home- toys or knick knacks.
• Thank you so much for your continued support with reading at home. We have been astounded by the number of books we get back everyday! It really is such an important part of our daily learning and we really appreciate your time and efforts at home. 
• Your child will have come home with the notes made by their teacher for your parent teacher consultation. If you ever need to speak with your child's teacher, please do not hesitate to email them.
