One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 18th March

HaPpY FrIdAy!

We have had an excellent week of learning this week. We cannot wait to share your children’s books with you today. We will be seeing the children out of class at normal time, then we will invite you back in to look at your child’s work. This will be until 3:45.

Phonics:

Most groups have started to learn set 2 sounds and are practising reading and writing them. The special friends are harder to spot in words, so we practise looking for the special friends, fred talk, then say the word. As children become more confident, they begin to fred talk in their heads which helps to build their fluency when reading. We have also been practising our handwriting, each letter has its own patter to help form the letters correctly (you can check these in your pink sound books). For example for 'd' we say, around the dinosaur’s bottom, up his tall neck and down to his feet!

In talk time this week, we have been learning new reading comprehension skills. We started by making predictions on the story Astro Girl, based from the front cover. We asked questions which we wanted to know the answers to as we read. This was tricky, as we had to remember the question words who, what, where, when, why and how. We learnt a new word- inference. This is when we know something from a story, which hasn’t specifically been told to us. For example, we might know that a character is happy if she is giggling. Finally, we spoke about our likes and dislikes about the book, using justifications for our thoughts. The children are becoming a lot more confident to speak in complete sentences in front of the class, and are realising we all like and dislike different things, this makes our conversations  more interesting!

Maths:

Our learning this week has consolidated our addition learning and helped our understanding of the part whole model. We started the week with both parts of the model filled in, and had to find out what the whole was. We know that adding can be putting 2 groups/ parts together to find the total. We used cubes to help us count out the parts, then moved on to jottings.

Finally, we moved our learning on to adding on a number line. This was a little trickier, as we had to remember to start on the biggest number, and jump on the smaller number. We worked with our partners to help us if we got stuck.

It is amazing how engaged and focussed the children have been this week, we are very impressed!

Topic:

To complete our learning about Space, we ended the week listening to the music composed by Gustav Holst – The Planets. As we listened, we talked about how each planet’s song made us feel. The children confidently spoke about the music and what it reminded them of, linking this to feelings and emotions. We used this to then create music to Mars- the planet of War! For the rest of the week, we created movement and art based on the music and the way it made us feel. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
