One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly news! 20.09.2024

And just like that, another week in Reception has finished! We are thrilled with how the children are settling in and have begun learning their routines. This is the time of term that we see very tired children who are realising that school is now part of their weekly routines and so we have been discussing how important it is to be getting a good night’s rest ready to start another day of exiting learning opportunities.  The children have been doing extremely well with their reading. Thank you for your efforts with this!

Read Write Inc

We are thrilled with the children’s eagerness to learn their sounds this week. We have begun the Read Write Inc programme and started to learn the sounds m,a,s,d,t. We have sent the pink sound books home this week for you to review the sound of the day with your child. We learn a new sound a day and revise this throughout the day and then the week. The children are learning the patter to help them form the sound and have been ‘pinching their pencils’ to help them form the sounds correctly. Here is an example of a patter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gg8-Zg99FbI&list=PLv80XE_mA4uy5WO-mMcUQ2vX6AdVpIPEk

Next week, we will be learning the sounds I,n,p,g,o

This is short video on what Read Write Inc is all about: How the Read Write Inc. phonics works - a parent/carer’s guide (youtube.com)

Maths

We have been working hard at counting carefully. We have been focussing on the order numbers come in and how we can use our fingers to help guide us. We have been making towers counting up and knocking them down, counting fish and letting them swim away and using pictures to find out how many objects there are.

Next week, we are learning patters to write numbers 1-5.

Thematic

Marvellous Me has kickstarted with conversations between the children about their families, likes and dislikes and what makes them special. The children have shared their home learning books with each other and been making their family trees, discussing who is in their family.

Next week, we will be working on their artistic skills by making contrasting portraits using a variety of materials.

Other news:

We are finding lots of un-named jumpers and cardigans. We know how chaotic it can be so we do try and write their names on if they are un-named, but we can’t always get around to 30 children.

We will be starting PE on Thursday 3rd October. Please make sure your child comes in in a white top, blue/black shorts/joggers and plain trainers. Also, any jackets for PE need to be named clearly-thank you!

Key dates:

Later this term, we will be celebrating Harvest. As part of this, we would like to invite families in to watch our Harvest Assembly. These will take place in the school hall on the following dates:

Tuesday 1st October: 9am Year R and 1 and 2.45pm Year 2 and 3

Wednesday 2nd October: 9am Year 4 and 5 and 2.45pm Year 6

Please enter the school via the main school office.

As part of the celebrations, we will also be collecting food that we will be donating to Thanet Food Bank. We will be making donations between Wednesday 25th September and Monday 30th September. If you are able to donate, the food bank accepts any tinned, jarred or packet foods that are in date. As a celebration of the donations, all children will be entered into a draw to win last years' celebration teddy bears, Kenneth and Susan.
