English
We are really getting into a class text, Skellig! We have used the text to solve retrieval problems through comprehension tasks and predict what may happen next. Mina has shown Michael some owls in an abandoned building and has taught him all about pneumatisation in birds; we made clay birds as we were inspired by Mina's creative side. We also wrote an internal monologue for Michael, focussing on his feelings about what he is going through whilst using a range of present tense.
Next week, Year 6 will be looking at poems based on themes within our class text. Using these themes, we will then write our own poems, using ambitious vocabulary and imagery.
Maths
We have really challenged our understanding of fractions this week. We used our knowledge of finding equivalent fractions to simplify fractions and then to order and compare them using < > and =. Towards the end of the week, we added and subtracted them by finding a common denominator.
Next week, we will be focusing on 2D and 3D shapes: we will learn the properties of a range of shapes before understanding types of lines. We will use our knowledge of shape to create nets and look for patterns between them.
Thematic
The Vikings have truly invaded in Year 6! On Wednesday, we visited the Viking Ship in Pegwell Bay, which sailed from Denmark in 1949. After exploring the ship up close, we played a few Viking-style games. We also used our skills as historians to evaluate the the accuracy of a range of sources. On Tuesday, we studied Viking runes, which were symbols that represent their alphabet. We created our own symbols, like the Viking king Harald Bluetooth, who gave his name to the technology we use today, using the runes. We thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Big Fat Quiz to test our understanding of the history of the Vikings - we showed that we all had learned a lot so far!
Next week, we will be focusing on the geography of our thematic: we will use Google Earth to locate places Vikings has invaded and settled, like York. We will also look at current maps of places where Vikings settled.
Love to Learn
You have learned so much about the Vikings! We would like you to create your own information pack about our topic - this can be in any style that you wish: poster, PowerPoint presentation, a video, non-chronological report, newspaper or any other way you wish! Remember, it must be informative yet engaging. Have fun showing off everything you have learned so far!
